Proficiency in any given type of meur isn't genetic; a fine blue conductor may come from a family previously specialized in red meur... but some families have traditions to uphold. Others may not be able to afford new relics.

...Nobility is defined by hereditary possession of the Gift of Meur. Until recently, it wasn't accepted that those with only one Noble parent inherited it. (They do!) The attorney Mr. Beiric is responsible for bastards being allowed to attend VRMA, where young Nobles study meur conduction.

Was asked awhile ago about Nobility hierarchy in Vestur. Each kingdom is ruled by a Monarch. They oversee Lords and Ladies, who hold authority over a lordship (piece of territory). They in turn appoint the Viscounts, who are granted their title based on what they can provide to the commoners.
