For sure, insofar as centralization is worth defending, there are surely other means of reinforcing proper governance practices. Having a board with seats reserved for representatives from the user base or relevant groups could help. But I agree you can only go so far with a top-down approach!

A non-profit model could help; I'm not from the US so I don't know how true it is there, but it limits the possibility of a private buyout. We have non-profit models in Québec that even prevent any change in ownership/mission unless approved by a judge. Social media needs that kind of governance.
