So glad to see @matthewakraft.com putting this on the record. I've been disappointed how much of the news cycle has focused on swipe access and surveillance. I always felt safe at Brown, and much of that is because the openness and sense of community. We're all so heartbroken.
Oakland's pilot stands out as a rare, real-world example of effective virtual tutoring at scale. Even at modest doses, students showed measurable gains. Our findings suggest that, when implemented strategically and equitably, virtual tutoring can be a powerful tool for early literacy recovery.
These findings are particularly compelling since tutoring was both virtual and implemented at scale—conditions often associated with diminished effects.
We find promising results: tutored students made larger gains than their peers in foundational reading skills like phonics and accuracy. The differences were meaningful, equivalent to about 1.3 additional months of learning.

Coverage of my new report with Ashley Jochim and Eupha Jeanne Daramola on the implementation and effects of a parent tutoring in Oakland Unified. tl;dr, parent tutors were highly effective--students tutored by parents saw reading gains just as large as those tutored by teachers.
