I had the unique opportunity to present a paper this past Tuesday on "Patient-Machine Interaction and #Decoding Medical Imaging" as part of a panel on Emerging Intersection of Computing and #Health at the University of Cape Town's Digital Health Summit.
Patrice Lumumba, the iconic DRC independence leader and its first Prime Minister, was brutally murdered on January 17, 1961. Remarkable to think he was overthrown by the venal and treacherous Mobutu Sese Seko after just 73 days on September 5, 1960, having ascended to office on June 24, 1960.

Cover of Residual Governance: How South Africa Foretells Planetary Futures by Gabrielle Hecht. Cover portrays a sandy and rocky landscape. In the foreground, a shirtless man, wearing blue pants and a black hat, chips away at the ground with a pick ax.
Big congratulations to @gabriellehecht.bsky.social, whose book "Residual Governance" has won the 2024 African Studies Association Best Book Prize!

This is (also) how anti-migrant politics is the spur to fascism
‼️ Although the rumour of big-scale evictions of camps by the Tunisian authorities that made its way around some weeks ago did not come true, we want to stress that there have been several smaller but no less violent raids. Migrants die every day as there is no medical care available.
Out soon: Exploring Ethnography of Outer Space: Methods and Perspectives, featuring my chapter "Anthropologists in outer space: Science fiction, infrastructure, comparison." A huge thanks to the editors for making this happen!

"France has for the first time acknowledged that its soldiers carried out a "massacre" in Senegal in which dozens – perhaps hundreds – of West African troops were killed almost exactly 80 years ago, Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has said."

I speak on the tense co-production of migration and society through the epistemological-political grids of “people” and “population” (>>> OA article: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...)
The European Commission failed to disclose documents on the EU-Tunisia Memorandum (migration, development, trade, green energy). After initial denial, the Commission identified 13 documents, none on preparatory exchanges. This raises transparency concerns.

This is a good start, but standards of asylum accommodation are still very poor in places. In our report last year we found people forced into entirely inadequate conditions, with little support, crowded together 10/11 to a room, minimal facilities etc.

We received an alarming footages from Southern Algeria in the City of Tamanrasset where for three days in low black migrants have been hunted down, beaten, tortured and thrown into the desert.

188 Palestinian journalists killed in the last 14 months.
