Come on! Turkeys don't fly xD

A little sneak peek of another strange creature inhabiting this dark place. Is it moth? Is it ram? Who knows... #indiedev #gamedev #pixelart #survivalgame #indiegame #goth #blonde #moth
Nice I guess the arms would look best if they were also animated sprites... But I'm not sure if it's not too much work for a little quality improvement. This makes sense if you want to use the animation for better attack telegraphing IMO. Otherwise, it really looks good as it is :)
Impressive technique! Are you using any skeletal mesh here or are they all animated sprites with different local translations in 3D? Anyway, the end result is great. I love how the sprites flip smoothly when he changes direction. Good job!
Thanks! I tried to push this animation to the limits. I try to play very safe with them... This time I wanted this impact to feel like she puts all her stength into it.
I tend to iterate a lot with secondary movements (hair, skirt) and the "feel" of these animations. I'm sure it can be done faster but it depends on your sprite size and how realistic you want the animation to be;)
Thank you so much! I started working on this anim yesterday morning... Hard to tell in hours. I'd say something like 5-6h? But you know, I wasn't making it entirely from scratch because I already had the idle pose ready :)
Thank you! :)
First attempt at combat mechanics. Parry using a magical Light shield followed by a counterstrike when the enemy is stunned. Still a long way to go to have it working in-game but the animation is always a crucial fist step :) #indiedev #pixelart #indiegame #goth #parry #animation #survivalgame
Thank you so much :)
Thaaank you:)
Fabulous, eh? :D They're meant to feel like a reward in a way ;)
Just a quick follow up to my previous post. This is the final implementation of bloom and highlights that I came up with. I'm leaving the values as they are for now ;) I'm really happy with the way her hand light looks now. #indiedev #gamedev #lighting #indiegame #goth #blonde #bloom
Or maybe it's actually too subtle of a change to even be noticed...
Thanks for the comment! This is purely a visual change. Light sources now have a bloom/glow around them that makes them more noticeable and a little less pixel-art because the glow effect is soft and bleeds outside of pixel bounds. So... I'm trying to evaluate a stylistic change ;)
I need your opinion on this one. I modified how the light sources glow (Hope's hand light, fire and sparks). They now feature a Bloom effect that's supposed to make the light more visually striking. Do you think it looks better this way? #indiedev #gamedev #survivalgame #bloom #indiegame #goth
Thank you so much! This motion was driving me crazy :D It's by far the most challenging animation that I've done ;) I'm super happy that you like the loot animation! I also think that it's a really nice touch.
I've spent way too long iterating it but I'm finally happy with the result. The final version of spear hunting and harvesting loot from a spider enemy^^ Not all spiders are gonna be impaled by a single throw. The proper combat is coming soon ;) #indiedev #indiegame #survivalgame #goth #hunt #gamedev
The most complex part is the custom lighting and making the shadows look the way they look here despite most objects being actually flat. Faking depth of the sprites is a little tricky too. The rest is mostly trying to be consistent with the style ;)
I wanted some bigger static objects to have depth and be 3D and from what I found mixing animated pixel art and voxels isn't something frequently seen in games... So I decided to make it my style ^^
Thank you so much! :) The world is a proper 3D scene with a perspective camera. Most objects are 2d sprites with shader magic and perspective tricks to look more 3d. But some objects like rocks and large trees are real 3D voxel-based objects. They fit together thanks to the same pixel/voxel scale ;)
Thank you so much! It's great to hear that! Not gonna lie, I was waiting for a comment from you :D I take it as a seal of approval ;)
I wasn't exactly happy with the first version of this spear throw so I tried to make it better. I changed a couple of things to increase the impact and make it feel more powerful. The spear trajectory was the most tricky to get right #indiedev #gamedev #indiegame #survivalgame #goth #spider #hunt
Ohh! Much better:)
Looks meneacing! His size compared to the protagonist works great. I think it blends a bit with the environment due to lack of some distinctive color but I know this palette is intentional. It probably won't be an issue once he starts moving. Could be a good idea to try some enemy color coding ,eh?
Thank you so much! There are two important aspects to consider in this situation:
1. She's an Australian :D
2. In this world, throwing yourself on a spear would simply bring you back to the start of the nightmare.
No other way to escape the spiders than through them.
It is tricky for sure. I'll try to make the most common cases look best;) (oh and the trailer shot for sure xD)
Thank you for feedback! I think it's a really good point. I struggled with the trajectory quite a bit... I can't decide if it should be pointed more vertically at such a short distance but I agree that something about it still looks a bit flat. Maybe like... 10 deg more would do the trick.
Ok, this one was tougher than I expected. This week I worked on implementing the spear throw in-game. It turns out that doing it in 2.5d so that it looks decent is not that easy :D Also, you can have a peak of my first corporial enemy - the spider. #indiedev #gamedev #indiegame #survival #goth #hunt
Updated version of the spear throw after some feedback :)
