I once had students watch the whole '88 speech, none of whom had heard of Jackson before. There were many tears by the end.
Jackson had a complicated record. But 1 thing I admired about him, especially at his heights in the 80s/90s, was his dedication to progressive internationalism - fighting Israeli and South African apartheid, for peace in Central America, for global justice. www.thenation.com/article/acti...
