Limitations and exceptions were designed for libraries, archives & research institutions - not for commercial cos who are financially well able to pay for licences - if the creatives who own the work choose to allow it to be sold. If this U.K. government tactic happens it’s underwriting theft.

Back in Geneva for the second meeting this year of WIPOs Standing Committee on Copyrights & Related Rights to represent @iawg.bsky.social and the voices of screenwriters globally to defend our work and our copyright especially in this era of generative AI.
Want to come work with me and our wonderful board?
Cannot wait to host these two stellar panels on my home turf on Saturday. Registration is still open if you want to come along.
If you missed out on the World Conference of Screenwriters in Galway last year - or you just really want to listen back, now you can, thanks to our friends at Film Ireland.
Today, the IAWG urged UNESCO to prioritise a global rights database to ensure that all writers have their work protected & reminded them of their duty to uphold the uniqueness of human creativity in an era where AI developers steal our work and insult culture by calling our creativity “data”.
An hour and 40 minutes after we were due to depart Stansted, and one change of plane, we don’t appear to be any closer to taking off. Which is fun.
Same old same old. Literally.
Just saw a stat that there are as many men called James or Jim in the cabinet as there are female ministers 🙄
Writers - have we thoughts yet on Patrick O’Donovan as our new Arts Minister? Can’t see any sense that he has a background or interest in the arts, but maybe I’m wrong.
Paul Gogarty quoting Chapell Roan is no “in the most unparliamentary language, F you Deputy Stagg”
Sure, let’s throw Kavanaugh in there. Because this wasn’t grim enough already.
To go from Kamala Harris as Vice President to JD Vance is one of the most depressing parts of this whole thing.
Why am I depressing myself by watching Trump’s inauguration? What a bleak day.
Barry McGuigan missing a golden opportunity there to do a karaoke version of Thank You Very Much Mr Eastwood. #imaceleb
Actually devastating.
Ugh
Thank Christ for that. #dublincentral
Watching Bertie Ahern spoofing on RTÉ like he’s some kind of wise elder statesman. #ge24
Been thinking a lot about the state of our politics in Mayo this weekend. Is the tendency to vote for your local man (and always a man) regardless of how objectively terrible they are in such a geographically large constituency something that can change?
Catherine Martin & Neasa Hourigan both in danger of losing their seats. Whatever your party politics, that’s a real loss of two strong and effective female politicians.
People have such short memories when it comes to Fianna Fáil.
And I see everyone’s favourite “man of the people” filmmaker is posting about his capacity to be elected. Meanwhile a genuine politician who has done actual good for the area is in danger of losing her seat. Please let this be one of the cases where the transfers work their magic.
I know it’s early tallies but still.
Did I hear that right? Gerry Hutch has more votes so far than Gary Gannon?! Sweet Jesus, people.
Only one political party mention protecting artists copyright against AI in their general election manifesto. Sadly there’s no Soc Dem candidate running in Mayo, so if you do have actual choice on your ballot paper, use it wisely.
This is not the kind of day to be productive. (Or at least that is what I have spent this snowy morning telling myself!)
Do you get to have a snow day when you’re self employed & work from home?!
Just a pair of snuggle buddies on a cold day.
Well this is infuriating. And sadly, entirely predictable. WGI members, if you find any of your work in this database, please let us know.
