100% this. I know people who do nothing; they could, but they choose not too. A very good friend describes this as being “deliberately sedentary” and that’s such a perfect phrase. Perhaps they’re fulfilled, but chatting with
them suggests otherwise.

Our outdoor interests are so good for mental health and our circle of friends, that without them we wouldn’t feel we were living life. Every activity can be a risk, we’re not going to sit indoors and do nothing.

My wife only swims in the lake with lifeguards, and she is trained in controlled breathing and cold water swimming, and knows how long she can safely swim for. She knows the signs of hyperthermia and how to best avoid it. She respects the water and what it can do.

My wife and I climb and surf, she swims in a lake all year round. Outdoor climbing grades are way lower than indoors; we climb known routes, we study the weather before (and sea if cliff climbing or surf). We know our limits, we respect the natural environment and what it can do.
