In 1981 Harvard University wrote an official letter to Nairobi University disassociating itself from Joseph Popp and his actions and “the difficulties and and inconvenience caused by this former student.”

“He was very strange… an odd character. I often wondered what went on behind the surface of that strange personality” Dr. Eric Nordberg, who was director of the Koralinska institute, is quoted as saying of Popp. Dr. Michael Migue who worked with Joseph Popp between 1983 and 1986 said he “spent too much time on the computer” and, Yerak notes in her article, described him with adjectives including “disciplined, serious, odd and quiet” as well as “ambitious and concerned about money”.
