Yesterday I saw something strange. A male common merganser, swimming in circles around something in the water. Through binoculars I saw the object was apparently a dead female merganser, neck stretched out and floating. I thought this was really sad. Finally he gave up and swam away and...the female suddenly perked up and resumed normal swimming and fishing behaviors. I guess this was her way of letting him know she wasn't interested, and I wonder if this would work for humans.
