Cutting NSF Fellowships is such a colossal own goal 😑
I received one in college and it allowed me to focus on lab research full time for the first time, which convinced me to go to grad school. There, I was also supported by NSF grants
BL: I wouldn’t be doing what I do were it not for the NSF
Has he considered asking NASA to do it? Just sayin

* IRANIAN DELEGATION PLANS TO TRAVEL TO ISLAMABAD TUESDAY: NYT

Iranian officials warned that its oil exports cannot be restricted while “expecting free security for others,” through the Strait of Hormuz.
TUI as the new naval hegemon.
I also enjoy that the names are just "my ship" with a number, absolute chads.
Write drunk, edit sober.
It’s from Hemingway, but what he really means is write without inhibitions, edit with inhibitions.
I’ve had the same editor since 1967. Many times he has said to me over the years or asked me, Why would you use a semicolon instead of a colon? And many times over the years I have said to him things like: I will never speak to you again. Forever. Goodbye. That is it. Thank you very much. And I leave. Then I read the piece and I think of his suggestions. I send him a telegram that says, OK, so you’re right. So what? Don’t ever mention this to me again. If you do, I will never speak to you again

The crucial thing to understand about Peter Thiel is that he adores "The Lord of the Rings" and no one in human history has ever so utterly completely missed all the salient points of what a book is about.
The blockade is blockading. And if the USN is hitting engine rooms, they'll need some tugboats pretty soon.
That’s great now do the Strait of Hormuz
This is as crazy as everyone is saying. Palantir is not a healthy company.

Iran fired at a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz early Saturday after reimposing restrictions on the waterway in response to a U.S. blockade on Iranian ports.
Iran is broadcasting this VHF message: "Attention all ships, regarding the failure of the U.S. government to fulfil its commitment in the negotiation, Iran declares the Strait of Hormuz completely closed again.
“Everyone now knows that if there is a conflict in the future, closing the strait will be the first thing in the Iranian textbook…You cannot beat geography.”

Iran has told mediators it will continue to limit the number of ships allowed to cross the Strait of Hormuz and charge tolls for the remaining period of the cease-fire, officials familiar with the matter said.-WSJ
This is—and I cannot overstate this—A HORRIBLE IDEA
Anyone who’s ever been there can tell you the Boundary Waters is a *national treasure*
It is a rare, pristine, paradise of wilderness and mining will 💯 pollute and ruin that 😡
Also the thing about being a generalist is that it’s harder to be proven wrong than it is for a specialist (better for politics) and it’s easier to flex to the topic de jure (better for career advancement)
There of course are these reports:
Numerous ships making the break for the Strait of Hormuz this evening have made abrupt U-turns and are heading back towards the Persian Gulf.
Over a dozen ships have already turned back.
