The great thing about having ecologists on speed dial is that you can send them of photo of an animal or plant and they'll identify it for you with you needing to ask

If you've ever worked with me, shared your story or expertise with me, supported me - thank you. You enable me to keep doing this work.
And for those who share with people how much my work has impacted you: it means the world to me when you do.
I've been so fortunate to have incredible people in my personal life, which has made things so much easier for me. Although I had my own internalised acephobia to work through, I haven't worried a lot about whether the people in my personal life will be accepting and supportive of my queerness.
I am not able to do advocacy work alone. I have worked with a lot of people over the years, and I have learnt a lot. I still feel like I'm learning how to do this. A lot of asexual people have shared their stories and perspectives with me, which has greatly shaped my work.
In my acceptance speech, I talked about how our actions can influence others, like a set of dominoes, and can have community wide reach. The small, everyday things matter for this, and we can all contribute to making change together.
Sarah holding a glass trophy in a box. The trophy is glass with a bulb shape, with a metallic part at the bottom which looks like the screw part of the bulb. On the glass is the Pride in STEM logo and "decadal award winner, Sarah Cosgriff". Sarah is wearing brown trousers, a short sleeve barong, and a blue and dusty pink bolero with butterfly sleeves.
Last night, I was one of the recipients of a Decadal Award from @prideinstem.bsky.social.
I've been spending some time thinking of the last 5 years of my LGBTQ+ and asexual advocacy work. It's something I fell into, and I'm so grateful for the opportunities and support I've received.
The government was forced to admit the EHRCโs transphobic draft guidance got it wrong, and theyโve had to send it back to the drawing board.
But the fight is far from over. They plan to bring an updated version back to parliament in May. So we need to act โ fast ๐
Really excited to be receiving an award on Friday but also panicking in queer Filipino of what to wear to honour my identities and feel good ๐
I'm considering a barong and terno combination which feels like a faux pas but also feels right?
I wrote a little thing about how we orient ourselves toward the moon, thinking with the work of @blmckean.bsky.social on neoliberalism
"Who gets to decide what future generations will see when they look at the moon through a telescope? Will there be a democratic process for deciding?" ๐งช๐๐ญ
It's International Asexuality Day today!
Inspired by my experiences of coming out as asexual, I have written a zine which provides an introduction to asexuality for those newer to this invisible sexual orientation.

This is not just a number.
This is one million people who have had to leave their homes and often their beloved pets. Theyโve had to leave behind Christmas cards their toddlers made, framed family photos, food, clothing, their fatherโs stamp collection, safety, and their memories.
I was chatting to young people about people who make science content online today.
Me: (talking about ASAP Science) so there are two gay guys - who are also in a relationship - who talk about science
Young person: ...Dan and Phil?
The International Asexuality Day Logo. The words โInternational Asexuality Dayโ are wrapped around a stylized map of the Earth, which has been coloured using the ace flag colours: black, grey, white and purple. Along the bottom are the aims of IAD: โAdvocacy, Celebration, Education and Solidarityโ.
Happy International Asexuality Day folks!! Julia Sondra Decked coined the term โinvisible orientation โ to refer to asexuality in 2012, and this still very much applies even today, almost 14 years later, especially in regions outside North America and Western Europe.

I love how International Asexuality Day is also the start of the tax year in the UK
I also assumed I was straight by default, but also this...
Me: hm everyone seems to be equally attractive
Me now that I know I'm ace: so it turns out 0+0=0
Happy International Asexuality Day!

My tree ID pins are officially back in stock, so I figured I'd challenge the internet to identify leaves in a video canopyrobin.etsy.com/listing/4386...
I am absolutely delighted to share that I am one of 10 people to be receiving a Decadal Award in a couple of weeks!
It's incredible to think that a lot of my work focuses on LGBTQ+ inclusion nowadays. Learning that I'm asexual has really changed my life - personally and professionally.
I'm grateful for the people who I've worked with and for the people in my life who supported me through my journey with queerness. It is impossible to do this work alone.
I'm also very grateful for the many aces who have shared their stories with me. I hope you've felt represented by my work.
The reflections in my personal life also started affecting my existing work in science communication and inclusive education, and has significantly shaped the freelance work I do now. It's made me better at what I do, and has lead to work opportunities I didn't expect. I absolutely love what I do.
And then one morning in August 2020, I had the "I'm asexual, aren't I" moment. It was initially quite scary, but also a relief to have an explanation for the experiences throughout my 20s.
I came out a few months later, and came to realise how invisible asexuality is. So I started advocacy work.
I started to read more about LGBTQ+ identities at this time, and had also just left a job at a youth charity. This inspired me to start laying down the ground work for STEM for Queer Youth with Pride in STEM, and learnt we were being awarded a grant in December 2019. The programme is still running.
The beginnings of this work came from a job I had at the Institute of Physics in 2018. I was working with an equality group in a school, and two students shared that they were queer with me.
I remember thinking about how that would not have been possible when I was in school (during Section 28).
I am absolutely delighted to share that I am one of 10 people to be receiving a Decadal Award in a couple of weeks!

Thanks Ty ๐
Thank you! ๐
