A shadow boxed, framed photo of the painting I made for dear friends. It’s in a copy of my old book, turned vertically and painted across the inside front cover and the frontispiece. It’s an absolutely flawless mounting- I was speechless when I saw it this morning.

A more 3/4 view of the framed work on the wall. Wow!

Close in on the mermaid- the primary image in the work. A couple of the windows in the home are reflected on the frame’s glass, but don’t distract too much. The figure is an homage to a masterwork by Alphonse Mucha- I’ve always loved his work. I first learned of him from rolling paper art! As we live on an island she had to be a mermaid- a towering vision of beauty, holding a wine goblet and holding and surrounded by vines and full, tempting bunches of grapes. Her hair and torso are festooned with the fruits of the sea starfish, shellfish, and oceanic riches. A fading, yet glorious sunset serves as a background of richly chromatic hot versus cool hues.

On the lower portion of the tribute is a rendition of the Coupeville (WA) Pier house, as seen from the end of our dock. I used my own photo for reference, as well as memory. It’s painted in more subdued blue hour colors. There are points of warm yellows in windows, and in the extreme (but small) foreground. There, on the deck of a small but elegant boat are my friends, toasting their love and lives under an avatar of their time spent as vintners in central California. My wife and I have never met anyone like them, and I hope I’ve done them justice with this painting.

Visited our friends today- and they showed this! It’s a beautiful shadow box framing of the painting I did for them in a copy of my old book. It’s just amazingly well done! I worked in picture framing as a ateen and can tell you that this was carefully designed and constructed. I am humbled.

We’re slowly taking down the holiday decor- but the tree and the lights are still up. The child in me loves all this too much, I guess.

Isn’t there a term for a person who has no soul yet still walks the Earth?
