Sam Nelson of Valley Leadership Academy is our NAQT MS Player of the Week.

Sam Nelson of Valley Leadership Academy is our NAQT MS Player of the Week.

From Coach Jennifer Nelson: What makes him a great quiz bowl player? Sam is very competitive and self-driven. He puts in a lot of time studying both the things he enjoys and the areas where he wants to grow. He also tries to encourage his teammates and create an environment where everyone is ready to contribute at tournaments. What studying tips does he have to share? Sam says "For middle school, play a lot of QB Reader on difficulty level 1. Once that is mastered, move on to 2, 3, 4, and so on. Write questions. And card, card, card." Any advice he has for other quiz bowl players? Quiz bowl is less about innate intelligence than it is about curiosity and strong study habits. Seek real understanding, learn how to study effectively, and keep building your knowledge over time. Anything else you'd like to share? When Sam was young, I put a map of the world above his desk at home. Little did I know how much geography he would learn simply from having this resource within view every day. I realized how much he loved trivia after giving him a "Book of Useless Information" that became bedtime reading for months. We are fortunate to be part of a team and school community with other families who are similarly supportive of giving their children opportunities to find their interests, no matter how inconsequential the sources of inspiration may seem.

Jeffrey Wu of Belmont Middle High School is our NAQT HS Player of the Week.

From Jeffrey Wu: I think what makes me a “great” quiz bowl player is that I genuinely like the things I buzz on. Instead of memorizing clues, I like to read in depth about so many niche things that they eventually come back to help me. Beyond my individual skills, I think what is most important is that I bring positivity to my team and thereby raise the ceiling for our entire team. Do everything but cram, especially the night before a tournament. Instead I think you should find a way to get exposed to quiz bowl and quiz bowl-useful things as much as possible. For me, podcasts (History of Rome, Fall of Civilizations, etc.) are the best way to get a little bit of learning here and there with a busy schedule. On the team side of things, focus on having a good time and not just results. Yes, results are important, but quiz bowl should be an enjoyable thing that you look forward to and not dread. A piece of advice for newer players, don’t be scared, everyone starts somewhere, and quiz bowl is genuinely one of the most welcoming communities I’ve been a part of. Have fun studying and I hope everyone does great in their next tournament.

Waukee Northwest is our NAQT HS Team of the Week. Left to right: Sam Ratcliff, Caden Byrnes, Conrad Hollister, Samanyu Duvvuri, Nathan Davis

From coach Jay Winter: Left to right: Sam Ratcliff, Caden Byrnes, Conrad Hollister, Samanyu Duvvuri, Nathan Davis What makes Northwest a great team is that they are balanced, committed, they followed a plan for success, and they genuinely root for each other's success. (Coach Jay Winter) Favorite studying tips include finding ways to practice when we aren't gathered as a complete team. (Sam Ratcliff) Have fun and enjoy the competitions! Have joy in playing and keep learning! (Conrad Hollister) When in doubt, guess that famous Chinese Author, Francisco Franco. He has been our fake guess for years! (Conrad Hollister) This team has been together by and large for five years and they have grown tremendously and they truly earned their state championship in Iowa. (Coach Jay Winter)

Conner Steede is our NAQT HS Player of the Week.

Conner Steede is our NAQT HS Player of the Week.

From coach Beth Holmgren: Conner is successful because he works at it every day. He is surrounded by a team of dedicated quiz bowlers who always want to practice. He is competitive and has goals (state and national competitions; improving). He has great "pace cars" (talented players on other teams who inspire him). He is silly, enthusiastic and has fun. A few study tips from Conner: There are many different ways to study (writing down, just reading, watching videos, active recall, protobowl, QBreader) not all of them work for everyone and you need to find which work. Don't overstudy as that can increase burnout, even studying and learning one small thing a day can be very beneficial.Take studying seriously (ie don't goof off during practice and don't do studying haphazardly). You have to be somewhat consistent and review things you've learned previously. Use Protobowl online. Start with middle school questions to build confidence and remember more material. Then move to easy or normal high school difficulty. Advice from Conner: Don't fear negs, but don't be overly risky Don't disregard answers people on your team give you Always be in a positive mindset and don't let others/yourself get into your head Have fun!

The attached picture includes each of these team members in that order, left to right, minus Jairam Curtis who was unable to be in the picture. Emerson A is a great team because, as a team of 8th graders, they have played together and been friends for the past three years. They work very well together and they have a good grasp on which topic each other teammate will know. They like to play QB Reader but they also read books and study random facts to prepare for Quiz Bowl. They also have fun quizzing each other, challenging each other, and their skill and hard work motivates younger members of Emerson's Quiz Bowl team to strive for the same levels of success.

From coach Eric Martin: What makes them a great team? Successful quiz bowl teams obviously have really smart kids who know a wide variety of information, but what makes the Logan team special is that they are all good friends and a fun group to be around. Keeping things light helps our team stay focused. What are their favorite studying tips? A few on our team utilize the NAQT study materials. Hans Kratt is an avid scroller of wikipedia, soaking up information and following links down random information rabbit holes. Any advice you or the players have for other quiz bowl teams? Don’t be too afraid to buzz in, our team had the second most incorrect answers but we went 10-0. If you think you know it, go for it! Any funny quiz bowl anecdotes? Our weekly team practices are in the mornings and powered by donuts. As Homer said, "Donuts. Is there anything they can't do?"

Henry Braden of Noe Middle School is our NAQT MS Player of the Week.

Henry Braden of Noe Middle School is our NAQT MS Player of the Week.

From coach Rich Verwiebe: Henry Braden has been a standout player throughout his middle school career. His success is due to his love of knowledge and his desire to learn. Henry demonstrates the maturity and composure that make him an outstanding team captain, setting an example for his other teammates. Henry is stellar in many subjects, including math, science, and social studies. His knowledge of geography and contemporary politics also proves to be extremely useful during Quiz Bowl matches. When asked about study tips, Henry replied, "Concentrate on what works for you. For me, it is using old questions, but others might find flashcards or fact lists more helpful." When asked for advice for other Quiz Bowl players, Henry stated, "Focus on having fun. Not only do you play better, but you feel relaxed. You should see tournaments as an opportunity to have fun with teammates, not a chore." Henry is often a top individual scorer at Quiz Bowl tournaments, most recently at the Kentucky State Championships, where he took first place.

Fort Zumwalt West is our NAQT HS Team of the Week.

Fort Zumwalt West is our NAQT HS Team of the Week.

From Coach Jeremy Gibbs: Last year, our four starters were [just] sophomores, [yet] all four of my players were chosen to attend the Missouri Scholar’s Academy in the summer of 2025. Our school is only allowed to send four students to that special camp. These same four easily won JV State that year and toppled one of the best teams in the state at districts, picking up the final three questions. This year, they have only played together in one full tournament, defeating some of the best teams in St. Louis (and the state) in the process on their way to FZW’s first varsity tournament championship since 2010. What Makes Them Great Their success comes from trust, balance, and unselfish play. They know each other’s strengths and consistently defer to the right teammate—something even top teams struggle to master. Study Approach We keep it simple and consistent. Our program uses a structured 26-week curriculum (20 Books to Know, 20 Artists to Know, etc.) paired with regular quizzes for accountability. Players also frequently use QBReader for additional practice. 1/3

From Coach Jeremy Gibbs: Advice for Other Teams Start with literature—it’s the most overlooked path to improvement. Build into history, revisit material often, and create accountability. Most importantly, learn to love learning. From captain Ryka Adi: Don't give up on your team! While our team has won several matches, our victories have come after learning from all losses, big and small. But our perseverance has led us to keep on trying, and eventually we worked up to becoming one of the best teams in the state. On that note, you never stop learning! There will always be questions you don't know, and teams you haven't beaten yet! You have to keep an open mind, and learn from success to pursue it From Tanisi Adi: Well, I would say make sure you have a good camaraderie with your teammates. We work really well together when we play quiz bowl, and it strengthens our teamwork and efficiency. I would also say don't be discouraged if you lose a round or neg on a tossup because there are always days where things will be better. Most importantly, have fun! From Sean Sathish: I really recommend that other teams build a solid study system to grow from. That is what our coach laid the foundation for at West, and it has worked impeccably. Another thing: learn about subjects that you genuinely enjoy. Each of our team members loves learning for learning’s sake, not just to win (although winning is a pretty big incentive too :)). 2/3

From Coach Jeremy Gibbs: Anecdotes At one point, we faced a particularly challenging set of literature bonus questions. Each time, our captain deferred to Tanisi—and each time, she answered correctly. At the end of the question, instead of saying, “That’s 30 points for Fort Zumwalt West,” Jason quipped, “That’s 30 points for Tanisi.” The room broke into laughter. Coach Background When I started teaching in 2002, I happened to walk into the math classroom of the Scholar Bowl coach. I saw a buzzer set and inquired why she had one. Up until that point, I did not realize that this was a high school activity or that the high school where I taught offered it. I stopped coaching in 2010 for a variety of personal reasons. After restarting the program in 2024, it has quickly regrown into one of the top teams in the area. 3/3

From club president Vidyut Arvind: Any advice you have for other quiz bowl teams? I would say to trust your teammates. They generally know more as a group in the best case, and you should trust them in guessing their categories if nobody knows an answer. You also never know when someone just has that random knowledge for no reason whatsoever, and that could be your teammates. (Dashiell Finer-Regn) Any funny quiz bowl anecdotes? An amusing memory was being in a close, tense playoff game at PHSAT 2025 when [redacted] managed to fall asleep in the middle of waiting for the other team's answer to a bonus. He was able to come back exactly five seconds later and accept their answer just in time. He was truly a pro. (Balint Csete) What kept you growing as a team? The major part of how we were able to grow so much so quickly was Vidyut's tireless recruiting efforts through the last couple of seasons. He spent an incredible amount of time finding new players, getting them interested in the game, and using his expertise to educate them on how to play well. Currently, we are sustained largely by the immense body of knowledge which our players come into the team with and the willingness many of them have to learn organically about their subjects far beyond quiz bowl practice. (Balint Csete)

From coach Sarah gleeson: What makes him a great quiz bowl player? What makes Asher a great quiz bowl player is his curiosity and love of knowledge. Asher was interested in quiz bowl in 6th grade before he could participate. He has a healthy level of competitiveness which helps him when competing. Asher says: Studying Tips: I always play QB reader for studying. One helpful tip is doing frequency lists and finding key words to those answers in power lines. Advice for other teams: Even though quiz bowl is played as a team, focus on yourself. The more you practice and put in the extra work, the better the entire team will be. Once I started a routine to study almost daily, my knowledge grew exponentially and it showed in the game too. Blurbs: Patrick. You're the best!!! 33% SMALL TEAM BONUS!!!! iykyk.

From club president Vidyut Arvind: Our A team members (those who went 11-0 at Marmad) are Vidyut Arvind (11), Dashiell Finer-Regn (11) Maxim Lin (10) and Adrian Bessen-Benitez (12). Other members are Balint Csete (11), Jacob Bayron (11), Nikolas Alekna (11), Ethan You (10), Jamie Chin (12). What makes you a great team? I think what makes us a team that works well is our combination of personal chemistry - being close friends outside of quizbowl and largely unserious - and how we fill in each other's gaps. There's rarely overlap among what categories the four of us do, and when it does exist, it manifests as one of us getting a buzz much earlier than the other would. (Vidyut Arvind) What are your favorite studying tips? I'd say go with the flow. Studying primarily comes down to what methods you find the most efficient and comfortable, and if you think it's good to synthesize them, put them together in whatever way feels comfortable to you. Personally, I go with QBReader and Wikipedia as my main studying sources, but none of the rest are ever out of the question. (Vidyut Arvind)

Ishaan Dinesh of BASIS Silicon Valley is our NAQT MS Player of the Week.

From Ishaan via coach Sowmya Srinivasan: What makes you a great quizbowl player? I have always really liked history and geography even before I started quiz bowl. Being on a team and participating in NAQT gave me a way to actually use what I knew and a reason to increase breadth and depth beyond those subjects. I definitely put in the work, but I wouldn't be where I am without my coach, club advisors and everyone who has supported me along the way. What studying tips do you want to share? Make it a habit - set aside a set block of time for quiz bowl everyday, whatever time slot works best for you and your goals. Regardless of what work you have that day, complete that study block like how you can’t move a class or can’t move a practice session. This way you can get some time everyday to study. Also, don’t force yourself to study subjects you hate as that will only demotivate you and make you find quiz bowl more of a chore than something you enjoy. Try exploring gradually and make it fun!

From Ishaan via coach Sowmya Srinivasan: Any advice for other quiz bowl players? Remember you have teammates for a reason! don’t try to put too much of the category load for yourself, do that on the side but focus on your main strengths and make sure your teammates can cover their strengths well. Also make sure the team skills complement each other so you all cover each other’s weaknesses fairly well. On bonus questions, even if you’re pretty sure you know the answer, always listen to what your teammates have to say. They might have a detail you missed and more importantly makes everyone participate more. Finally, play quiz bowl to have fun! Any other info you'd like to share? Maybe I would emphasize real learning. One thing I’ve learned is that there’s a big difference between memorizing questions and actually learning a subject. While tools like QBReader are amazing for practice, I always tell people to go deeper. If a book comes up in a tossup, read the plot summary for it. If a painting is mentioned, look it up so you can visualize it while it is being asked about. Quizbowl is much more rewarding when you actually understand the clues you’re buzzing on.

Austin Chen of Geneva High School in Geneva, NY is our NAQT HS Player of the Week.

From coaches Victoria Lehman (V) and George Goga (G): What makes them a great quizbowl player? Austin is hard work personified. This is hard to believe, but Austin did not answer one question during his middle school years. As a freshman, he had the opportunity to play with some very talented students and they modeled professionalism. He is quick of mind and consistently prepared. The only senior on our team, he is patient with his teammates. He is also unfailingly kind and polite. Austin is a true gentleman. (V) [Austin] is a remarkable young man, an excellent student, and a stellar QB player. In my literature seminar, his insights are always astute, and his reading is informed by a depth of critical analysis and cultural competence. Just today, as we encountered the cyclops in The Odyssey, he mentioned a potential QB question which could arise from the text! He's a great kid. (G) From Austin via coach Victoria Lehman: What studying tips do you have to share? Staying consistent is very important, whether you are playing QB reader daily, or hitting your ANKI webdeck. What matters in the end is routine and if you make smaller, minute improvements you will ultimately become a better player. Any advice you have for other quiz bowl players? Quizbowl is a very competitive sport and you are bound to lose many games throughout your career. You have to get in the mindset of pushing on, take it on the chin and go forward. I recently had a game where I negged 6 times but got eight toss ups.

Indian Hill High School from Cincinnati, OH is our HS Team of the Week. Indian Hill's A team are seniors Andrew Hu, Ricardo Gomez-Nieves, Ethan Brown, and Caroline Winks. Andrew and Ethan have played for 4 years; Ricardo and Caroline for 3 years.

To risk repeating other Team of the Week coaches, Indian Hill's A team is successful because they compete unselfishly together. While eager to improve their own stats, each player is equally excited for a teammate's incredible buzz as they are for their own. Of course these players are all uniquely intelligent, but I've coached other players with sky-high potential who don't stick around to be one-fourth of an unimaginably special group rather than the star they are accustomed to being. These four prefer playing together and have formed a bond of trust and friendship that has enabled them to shake off the negs and focus on the next tossup. Favorite study tips? They all agree that taking hard classes and doing well in them is the primary thing, and the secondary thing is to deeply learn all you can about what you love. Specifically, one player watched a 9-hour documentary about the Mongol Empire; another routinely loses hours deep-diving through Wikipedia; another concentrates hard on remembering anything encountered that might come up in a match; and another says that finding humor and making jokes out of content both makes it stick and makes it fun. I'll add that while the exact method of studying doesn't matter too much, doing something matters a whole lot!

Regarding advice for other teams, what made a difference for my team was eliminating (as much as possible with a dozen teenagers) negative comments and bickering. Questioning a teammate about a "stupid answer" that they already regret never helps either player. I also discourage players from using negative self-talk as a means for deflecting pressure; for example, when players say "I hope I do well but I'll probably blank on __", I tell them not to talk that into truth, as the brain will do what is rehearsed. The funniest stories our team has won't translate well without context, but hearing a player order a hamburger with a hot dog on the side on our SSNCT trip last year still makes me laugh! Playing tossups on the same topic as a conversation that happened hours earlier is always funny, like the SSNCT question about Dubai that mentioned [a clue] that we were talking about just before the match! As a coach, I always look towards the team's future by recruiting younger players and developing rookie talent. The difference this year is that I'm also trying to savor every practice and tournament with this extra-special group of seniors that only comes along a few times in a career. We are all so grateful to NAQT and the Ohio Academic Competition (OAC) for providing such a fun and enduring activity that we've enjoyed together for years. There are 8 more players on the team: Senior Jackson Curt; Junior Hannah McParlane; sophomores Eduardo Gomez-Nieves, Drew Gailey, Owen Vonderhaar, and Jackson Revis; and freshmen Rocco Cardosi and Devyanshie Rautela.
