This Wednesday marks the *10 YEAR* anniversary of First Draft Book Club at @changinghands.bsky.social. The only thing I've ever stayed committed to for 10 years before is a cat. It's one of the great joys of my life to read and discuss books with my community

A world historical obscenity. Like the Biden administration before them—which vetoed numerous resolutions to stop the genocide—the Trump administration is the lone vote against. www.theguardian.com/world/2025/j...
Hey, thanks! It was time we headed over.
So has Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, Doctors Without Borders, the Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention, a UN Special Committee, the International Criminal Court at The Hague ("plausible genocide"), numerous genocide scholars, and other international bodies.
Does @democrats.org's "ironclad support" for this government still hold? Even as major international bodies redouble their efforts to warn the world?

More book purges—many more—coming from our neofascist government, this time under the supervision of a temporary “Academic Libraries Committee.”

❝It is hard to imagine a world in which a government would implement such depraved policies to starve a population to death, while trucks of food are sitting only a few kilometres away.❞ —UN Special Committee

It's worth saying she's one of only three people in this role to have actually been a librarian, not to mention that this is not in the executive branch's purview.
Impossible to communicate to people that once you decide that a group more vulnerable than you can be sacrificed in the name of your own safety or interests that you have already entered into an tacit agreement that you can also be sacrificed in the interests of a group less vulnerable than you.
World Central Kitchen has run out of food to serve in Gaza. Its bakery ("recently the last working bakery in Gaza") is out of flour. There are 100,000+ tons of food in staging areas within driving distance of Gaza, and Israel refuses to let them in wck.org/news/gaza-up...
Will anyone with access to power and a shred of decency do anything to stop this?
Famine in Sudan and Gaza…completely human made. The US has its hands in both.
My parents survived a famine in northern Viet Nam that killed a million people in 1945. That was induced by Japanese occupiers and French colonizers.
I can’t believe this history is being repeated.
❝Two million Palestinians in Gaza, nearly half of them children, are now surviving on a single meal every two or three days. . . . In the past 10 days, our lab technicians began detecting ketones, an indicator of starvation, in one-third of urine samples tested.❞
❝Every hour is a race against time—but without the access and political will needed to deliver aid, save lives, and end the unimaginable suffering, our hands are tied.❞

You know that if the New York Times is reporting this, then the situation is extremely dire. Palestinians have been saying for months that famine is happening due to Israel’s siege. That is a war crime, Israel is the agent, the US is the sponsor, and American taxpayers are rendered complicit.

The shock for Europeans is not that American betrayal is new, it’s that American betrayal is aimed this time at historically white countries.
In this piece, published first in Italian and then in English in Zeteo, I put this betrayal into the context of a longer history of the United States betraying its allies and its own people—usually nonwhite.
Italy’s LA STAMPA asked me to write about the European sense of being betrayed by the Trump administration.
