As I start the foundation for my new game after my break, I have a number of goals. One of the most crucial is learning how to code smarter. Brute forcing and copy/pasting was easier than adding new nodes to my mental dictionary.
Time to change that.

At this point, I get calls twice a week from my new bank regarding my inability to transfer money in or out of the account. Every time it's the same message: still doesn't work.
It'd be more frustrating if it wasn't so absurd. Maybe on my 10th call I'll get some kinda freebie... ๐ค
So for now, taking a small break until after Pax East, working on some YouTube scripts, then diving into a new game with much better 20/20 vision.
For making it this far, I gift you a picture of my ever-patient Bean, resting gracefully on a leftover piece of foam from my mic booth box creation.
I have a way better understanding of how to tell how large a game *really* is now, and how important working on systems is before touching *any* of the shiny, high-fidelity assets I can't wait to put into a level.
I'm only allowed whiteboxed levels until I can get from start to finish in game. ๐คญ
Coming to terms with that, I've decided to shelve the project for now and start something much much smaller. I learned a ton about level design, as well as all the other niagara effects, monster AI, and other facets of the engine that I didn't know before.
And a lot more about foundation building.
Being new to a hobby means progress isn't linear. After some hard realizations in the past weeks, I've realized that the Convent horror game was just scoped too large, and I'm in too much tech debt. I wanted it to be a 6-month endeavor, and I have a minimum of 12 before it's halfway decent.

After a few weeks in the DaVinci and YT mines, it took some time to shake off the #UnrealEngine rust. Celebrated with some Niagara learning: mesh renderers and array randomizers, collision events, random rotation.
Rocks fall, everyone dies.

As I've been falling more and more down the rabbit hole of movement games, I've really been enjoying freedom of movement, and the sword lunge technique feels SO good I want to find a future game to integrate it into.

Very well! The pop filter's turnbolt is a great resting point for the back of the box, so it's consistently in the same spot. The only variable is where your head is when you speak, so I plan on making a chin rest so that distance is always consistent too. Big difference compared to blanket/nothing.

Haven't been posting as many development updates lately. Been solidifying my timeline for my game and working on polishing DaVinci skills, as I plan on trying to dabble in YouTube dev logs and memes as well. Honestly, Audacity and DaVinci work has been a nice break and fun to learn.

You start off by crouch slide jumping. Figuring out the grappling hook. Air strafing. You get your first taste of weightlessness.

Still working on polishing the rough edges of particle effects and animation, but not a bad start. Loving how the shadows of this place feel mixed with the brightness of the torches.
