I took a few Tesla taxis recently and… urgh yeah. Not just frustrating, but also every time the driver said before I even moved to get out “Press the button”… which means it happens all the time and they are used to people being stuck.

An illustration of a bird at the top of a very long pole, and at the bottom of the pole a snail shouting “On my way!”. The illustration style draws the characters in full black brush strokes, on a sunset like background.

Design was never the bottleneck Design knows how to make things that do not yet exist. The work ahead may be to apply that capacity to the profession's own institutional life

I wrote about why design keeps failing to gain autonomy, and why AI is accelerating the same trap. The answer has nothing to do with better frameworks or leverage skills but with the structure of the system designers are trying to (and ultimately always fail to) influence.

70 powerful Bay Area men were accused of sexual misconduct. What happened next? Since 2010, scores of prominent local men have faced allegations ranging from sexual harassment to rape. Most have returned to the highest echelons of public life.

Harassing has so little long-term effect: "We found that 76% of the men we reviewed are professionally active, 41% are in the same or an elevated role since the allegations were made public"
I'm glad someone is keeping track so industries hold people accountable

This is so incoherent that it only makes sense as a billionaires reactionary brain farts. Eg: public employees are not “priests” and are over compensated. Reality: they are underpaid and have been serially abused. Next point, people engaging in public life (read: DOGE, Palantir) deserve our grace.

seven months on beehiiv, by the numbers was leaving substack worth it?

There's a lot of talk about leaving Substack & whether it will be the death-knell of your newsletter. I have been on Beehiiv for 7 months now & @tlpavlich.gay helped me run some numbers. So, was leaving Substack worth it? The answer, for me, has been a resounding "yes."

Here are the hard numbers:

This thread is amazing, full of creative humans helping someone be creative by offering dozens of beautiful, practical variants on "you've got this! Let yourself mess around & fail! Do something else! It's all good."

Neat little technofascist manifesto.

What could possibly go wrong granting a company access to militaries and police forces around the world that talks of "regressive" cultures and reclaiming national values, the need for militarization and a new age of AI weapons that they will bring about.

I'm not joking when I say mRNA technology is more important than "AI" and it's a tragedy we're throwing billions into one while our government is aggressively defunding the other.

Indeed. Misaligned is a great of framing.

Empathy being performative for neurotypical people is a given, and lack of it is considered “not empathy”.

Even more: lots of autistic people feel so much more, thus tend to either develop shields (i.e. dissociation) or distance to not be affected so much.

Today’s The Times Scotland front page with the top story “Cherry: SNP made me ashamed so I quit party”

Hey the Times, I quit a political party over trans issues and have a book to promote, can I have a front page spread?

Oh, that’s only reserved for transphobes and not trans people? Never mind.

Zoom teams up with World to verify humans in meetings | TechCrunch Meeting platform Zoom has announced a partnership with World, Sam Altman's human ID verification company, to ensure that the people attending meetings are actually human and not AI-generated imposters...

“Zoom said that hosts can enable a Deep Face waiting room to require all participants to verify their identity. Participants can also request mid-call that someone verify themselves on the spot.”

I’ve been thinking recently that with increased automation, capitalism, and integrated systems society has lost the “gray” areas that smooth interactions.

A human can assess exceptions.

We need more soft systems: automated yet with human judgement.

Does anyone know existing writings on this?
