Fiction to look out for in 2025 An epic family saga, new novels from Natasha Brown and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, plus a David Szalay masterpiece… the coming year looks good

Have scraped into this list for April next year along with some brilliant authors and interesting political writing.

A page from the book reads:

Ursula K. Le Guin's Crab Nebula

Make a cream sauce with tablespoon butter, 2 tablespoons flour, 1 cup milk. Add about one cup grated Tillamook cheese (or more—or less ... if you are unable to obtain Tillamook you may use any inferior American Cheddar, but the difference will be noticeable, unless you have a calloused palate).

Now add about 1/2 pound? 2 cups? —Well, add enough crab. (If you are unable to obtain Pacific crab, you may use those flabby little Atlantic ones, or even lobster; but if you are reduced to king crab, forget it.)

Flavour with sherry to taste, salt, pepper, parsley.

Serve on rice, or wild rice if you are J. Paul Getty, or English muffins, or whatever.

If you're looking for a new recipe, perhaps Ursula's Crab Nebula—which appears in the new UK book Sylvia Plath's Tomato Soup Cake—might be just the thing?

I can’t believe it’s been a year since I did stand up comedy with Adam Kay. Thirty minutes in front of 350 people. I was terrified but I ended up having a great time, not sure if the audience did.

You are the Hogarth of our time mate. Pictorial satirist, social critic, bitingly accurate.

Sounds more like a singular night shift, rather than plural. Why wasn’t he challenged on this?

My friend sent me this snap of my book on sale in Hong Kong. Stitched Up: Stories of Life and Death from a Prison Doctor has been translated into Mandarin. These are the moments that make all the hard work of writing a book worthwhile.

Still figuring this out and I’m glad it’s not the pit of doom of the sunken place.

Yes please, published author, working on my latest book. Interested in anything writerly or doctorly or prisonly.

Never, I was so excited to see the Chinese translation of my book in sale in Hong Kong, it still feels unreal. It’s a great feeling. Well done.
