A collection of photos, one is the "true" reference photo of Shino the previous painting is based on. The three other images crop and colour the reference in different ways to emphasize different things
The exercise was to alter the composition (and lighting) in different ways to reinforce the story you're trying to tell. This course taught me so much about new ways to use reference I never would have thought about.
My goal in the composition was to contrast Shino's uncertainty with my excitement

I was lucky to take Kat Tsai's colour and light class last year, this painting of a critter called Shino (my very first foster cat) was for homework

If I missed you I'm sorry I was at both shows for probably 30 minutes cumulatively...
Even that was enough to knock me out and I wasn't able to post so I'm going to get caught up on my art posts now...

the cover for kathleen gros's middle grade graphic novel CAROUSEL SUMMER. Two white girls (one blonde one with brown and purple hair) stand on a dreamy background with a montage of summer scenery, letters to be mailed, and carousel horses.
the cover for kathleen gros's adult graphic novel I Hated You in High School. Two white women stand in standoffish but blushing poses, crumpled note paper makes up the background.
Oh dang. I can't believe both of these graphic novels have been out for a year! In retrospect it was pretty wild to have two books debut within 2 weeks of each other. I'm so proud of these & all the work I poured into them.

Every local bookstore having a website that you can order books on, whether the store currently has that book on the shelf or not, has got to be a HUGE part of this. The Amazon website is big, stupid, full of ads, and shipping is wildly uneven (because they lump in so many third party sellers).

A sketchy series of illustrations showing anthropomorphic pigeons. One is carrying many bags of groceries while wearing a mask. Another is lying upside down on the couch binge watching something. Another is disinfecting everything. Another is sucked into a switch game. Another is doing at-home workouts.
More pigeons, one is doing a zoom call, another is singing, a little group is banging pots and pans
More pigeons. Another anxious zoom call (social). Doomscrolling, baking bread, making cocktails and knitting...
I also did this series of "Pigeon People doing Pandemic Things" for something that never went anywhere but I do still like the drawings haha... #repostyourart

an illustration of jam in bike gear trying to kiss a persian cat (Shino) who is NOT into it, during October 2020. In the background you can see them taking a long bike ride.
That time was a catalyst for a lot of people, and for me it was also the start of my journey fostering cats. I was able to do things differently, and start building a different life for myself. Even though it was globally traumatic, I still feel grateful for what I was able to learn about myself.

A comic about jam.
p1: They are jolted awake at 5am. "ugh..."
p2: Jam, puking
p3: Jam, sitting on the toilet with a thermometer in their mouth googling "coronavirus dry heaving". Their temperature is normal. Their most common symptoms were "fever, dry cough, tiredness..."
p4: Jam, googling "anxiety dry heaving". The results say "Stress and anxiety have been known to trigger dry heaving. [link] Strange signs you're way too stressed". Jam: "When am I gonna learn..."
Idk. I feel like "learning to live with anxiety" is not a very profound lesson, but maybe "learning to live with anxiety when everything outside is confirming that you are anxious for real valid reasons" was a tough one.

A comic about jam.
p1: jam is curled up on the couch reading all sorts of anxiety-inducing headlines on their phone.
p2: They lay down on the couch and all of the headlines disappear like a burst bubble.
p3: Jam, staring with existential dread into deep space. Into their thoughts, unbidden, appears the meme....
GET STICK BUGGED LOL
My experience felt so small and unimportant, I think that's part of what made it hard to share. It was like... "why are you taking up space with this, who cares..."

A four panel comic featuring jam.
p1: Well, spring was a total wash. (Jam doing dishes with a big lock symbol behind them for lockdown.)
p2: Summer was... awkward (Jam riding their bike to meet Alina from a distance, both of them are masked).
p3: I've been preparing for a long, hard winter. And I feel... ready? (Jam is pickling some vegetables and there's a big bag of flour on the counter.
p4: But I'm probably not. (Jam is anxious... oh boy...)
I also made some comics that probably most people haven't seen because they felt too vulnerable at the time.

An illustration of jam lost in a cloud of confusion with a bunch of red arrows swirling in all different directions
I think the anxiety/surreality of that time is what made the most impact on me. Anxiety is a constant companion but without anything to counterbalance it really felt like it dominated my time.

An illustration of jam banging pots on their balcony in April 2020
An illustration of jam riding their ebike out to see a friend in August, 2020
An illustration of jam paralyzed with anxiety during July, 2020
Another illustration of jam paralyzed with anxiety but this time there are foster cats in November, 2020
It seems like we're not supposed to remember or talk about it for some reason... but I appreciate being able to go back and reflect on what that was like and how I still managed to get through it somehow.
