Interesting read, having a teenage daughter is something else. My existential angst about it is off the charts… www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Politics is inevitable amongst humans. Religion has no place imo but if people want to practice faith they’re welcome to 🤷

Two bar charts compare the intervention vs. control groups for clinically significant residual gastric volume. Chart A: Intention-to-treat analysis, Chart B: Per-protocol analysis. Both show higher volume in the intervention group.
Continuing #GLP1 or GIP agonists before upper endoscopy increased the risk of clinically significant residual gastric volume, with no additional aspiration events.

A humanist is a person who recognises this life is the only life we have, and therefore, resolves to live a moral a fulfilling life in the here and now, based on the inherent human capacity for compassion, and a desire to do good on its own merit. Being a humanist is simply a way of thinking and living that emphasises humanity's capacity and responsibility to promote human flourishing across all frontiers, to protect the natural world, and to work towards a more tolerant society where rational thinking and kindness prevail.
Infographic titled “Carl Sagan’s Baloney Detection Kit: A humanist guide for detecting bullshit,” adapted by Humanists UK. It presents nine principles for critical thinking: (1) seek independent evidence, (2) encourage open debate, (3) question authority, (4) consider multiple hypotheses, (5) stay open to changing your mind, (6) quantify where possible, (7) ensure every link in an argument holds, (8) apply Occam’s Razor (prefer simpler explanations), and (9) beware unfalsifiable claims
Carl Sagan's 'Baloney Detection Kit' – a set of tools for sceptical thinking and scientific reasoning, designed to help people spot logical fallacies, misinformation, rhetorical tricks, and deceptive arguments.
Oh gosh I’m sorry , we lost a dog about 2 months ago, I can’t remember the last time I cried so much, little buggers don’t live long enough. Virtual hugs…
I think the companies are over selling the size of batteries and making hay while the sun shines. Unless you need off grid I don’t think anything larger than 20kW is really needed - being able to energy arbitrage won’t last for ever I suspect …
This turned up on my kindle after the longest preorder ever! I’m glad you got to write what you wanted to write. It’s well written and original, not my usual fare I have to say, I’m more hard sci fi but nonetheless a good read. You may be sick of hearing it (hope not!) but Altered Carbon FTW.
Haven’t seen that I’ll take a look 👍
As a doctor who has carried on when the machine started moving, knowing it was likely futile, the moral injury is real. All of which could be avoided by talking about death and knowing it unavoidably, inevitably comes to all of us…
& have no doubt that in every western country with an aging population (which is all of them) health care rationing is coming (if it’s not already) and not knowing how to die is going to burden yourself, your family and the system. Doctors don’t die like their patients. There’s a reason for that
We can prolong the inevitable, sometimes hours, sometimes days, sometimes weeks. But if that time is on ICU or “recovering” from ICU with delirium and frailty as your bed fellows, I’d hazard that a different approach might be braver…
So if you’re presented with “this is going to kill you and it’s going to do it soon” sometimes the choice is to accept the inevitable, get your affairs in order, say whatever it is that needs to be said and stay as far away from hospital, or surgery, or ICU as you can…
But doing everything is often the wrong answer and the older you get the more likely it is to be wrong. I don’t have a crystal ball but I’ve seen a lot of people die…
A thread about dying. As in how do you want to do it? Because it is inevitable. Some things happen to people and honestly their time has come. But the machine starts to turn and because you’ve never thought about it before, and now suddenly you do, you say to us “do everything”
Walking in for the evening shift and the trepidation is high…
