This sort of thing is happening already fwiw in communities I'm seeing:

libraries hosting knowledge bars weekly - local experts come in like a bar night to talk/chat to adults about things.

DIY repair free clinics to teach how to fix things - even late at night.

Build the communities your govt's

I get yelled at for saying this but for many hundreds of years people went to university not to get diplomas or be employable but because immersion in the humanities was considered foundational to a good life, and school must return to its original purpose: the joy of learning.

We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art, and very often in our art, the art of words.

I will never get used to the disdain our country holds for brown and Black children.

From Palestine to Iran to Sudan, we normalize the destruction of schools and hospitals and daycares. We reduce children to death tolls and their futures to rubble with no consequence or second thought.

During the U.S.-Israeli attack in Iran on Saturday, dozens of people, most of them likely children, were killed when a strike hit a girls’ elementary school in Minab and a high school in Tehran, according to Iranian health officials, state media and a human rights group. trib.al/y3MsQLC

Her community rallied so fast and so diligently. This is a victory to uphold and celebrate. Reminds everyone that it's worth fighting back.

I can't believe I can finally share this story! 🥹🖤

In "The Homeowner's Bride," the protagonist is a haunted house that's DTF. Both horror and a love story, it's one of the strangest, riskiest, most heartfelt things I've ever written, and I'm so thankful that Otherside took a chance on this piece.

A picture of art advice:

Don't worry about whether your art is perfect. Instead, ask yourself this:

Did you enjoy creating it?

Does it feel meaningful?

Does it please your inner goblin?

Is it shiny, stinky, or sharp?

Could you trade it for a rusty sword or some slightly used meat?

Would it make good bait for a nasty trap? Something with a big spikes or a log that swings down and makes your enemy go squish?

Did you learn something you can use to make your next artwork even better?

That's how good artists become great.

I was part of the mass exodus of writers from twitter but hadn't formally deleted my account until now.

So starting Jan 15th Twitter is adding to their terms AGAIN. The TLDR; You will no longer be able to opt-out of Grok or AI training. Having a Twitter account will automatically grant Twitter full license to anything you post and will be fed to AI training. Period. Not just AI scraping, but full-on.

I follow the quiet signs—
deer tracks by the creek,
water moving forward,
small miracles underfoot.

Nature keeps reminding me that renewal is real, that light finds its way back, even after the storm.

It's a new year new you, so you should write that book.

Because while you wait for that mythical 'right time', you're letting go of the fire and passion of your 20s, 30s, 40s, and on, all of them unique literary selves that you'll never get back.

So don't miss out. Just make the time.

Write.

Just filled out (at length!) this excellent survey about how SFWA should handle LLM/GenAI use in award eligibility.

It’s open to readers as well as writers so if you have serious & considered opinions plz fill it out, especially if you have edge cases to share that others may not have thought of.

"When wealth is passed off as merit, bad luck is seen as bad character. This is how ideologues justify punishing the sick and the poor. But poverty is neither a crime nor a character flaw. Stigmatise those who let people die, not those who struggle to live."
