Italian musical theatre is just different

A few reviews have called out some of the scenes in which said theme plays as the film’s emotional highlights. I would add that this scoring choice is what makes those moments all the more surprising and touching for people who think they already know this material beat by beat (🙋‍♂️)

One sneaks in to almost comical effect as Galinda becomes Glinda, but another turns what is, in the show, a nice but otherwise isolated number into a poignant leitmotif.

In addition to some fun modulations in “Popular” and a gorgeous cascading run by Cynthia in “I’m Not That Girl,” one musical detail I really appreciated was the introduction of a couple melodies from Act II(/Part II).
