Research universities are often the largest employers in their region. They are often the primary health care providers to communities. This funding shift will not only reduce US research leadership, it will put working people out of work and reduce healthcare access.

Scientists and journalists need to figure out right quick how to explain to the average person how a massive change in research indirects will impact the medical care they and their children get (eg at the local children’s hospital), the education their children will get, the price of tuition, etc.

My NIH study section that was to meet tomorrow was one of those canceled. This represents many months of work by the applicants and by the NIH staff and reviewers. Devastating is the correct word.

RhlR-mediated cooperation in cystic fibrosis-adapted isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa | Journal of Bacteriology Quorum sensing (QS) mutants arise in a variety of populations of bacteria, but mutants of the gene encoding the transcription factor RhlR in Pseudomonas aeruginosa appear to be infrequent. Our work pr...

The story behind the paper: conceptually, this material was the 2nd part of Dr Renae Cruz’s thesis. But the Covid-19 pandemic intervened, and she graduated in May 2020. Because of the pandemic, the project did not move forward for two years. /1

Impostor syndrome: “I don't know what I'm doing. It's only a matter of time until everyone finds out."

Growth mindset: "I don't know what I'm doing yet. It's only a matter of time until I figure it out."

The highest form of self-confidence is believing in your ability to learn.

It was so awesome to have you visit! And Stanley Perlman, too, of course.

I had an excellent visit to KU today, hosted by @jrchandler.bsky.social! Great people and science here.

When I was a PhD student I would not have imagined that I would be advertised on a flyer next to my mentor Stanley Perlman — although, notably, he is a “distinguished speaker” and I am not.

A thread on NIH Reorganization and the Scientific Management Review Board (SMRB)

Disclosure: I was involved with the SMRB since its inception and have very strong feelings about how it was used, misused, and abandoned. My passion on these issues will undoubtably show through.

Cuboidal cell packing is a common yet understudied route to multicellularity. In work led by @rpineau.bsky.social and Ozan Bozdag we explore its origin as a multicellular geometry capable of supporting a transition in individuality using fission yeast. 1/14 www.biorxiv.org/content/14.1...

Person 1: I had a dream last night that the university decided to lay off a bunch of faculty and use that money to hire Pete Davidson to walk around campus and say encouraging things to the students and they were convinced this was a great educational plan and I was all like, wtf why is everyone obsessed with Pete Davidson

Person 2: Ok but that's not a totally unreasonable scenario
