On the left: an image of two jars filled with coins, one with a man's silhouette and one with a woman's, on a red background. The male jar contains a greater amount of coins. On the right: text that reads “$28,600 a year: what the average older Canadian woman lives on. Many choose flexibility or family over pay, only to arrive at retirement with a meagre pension.”

Canada’s retirement system is leaving women behind. Despite decades of reform, older women still earn far less than men and face higher poverty rates. Journalist Moira Welsh on what it will it take to close the gender pay gap: https://thewalrus.ca/canada-pension-gap/

How tragic that you could publish, then re-publish, then re-publish, then re-publish, then re-publish a cartoon like this over and over again...

I’m really sorry this happened to her. It’s a good opportunity to discuss front license plates, automated enforcement (cameras), and stronger penalties for repeat offenders. The same fines could help fund a better system for prevention and behaviour correction/education.

This incident could have been avoided by swapping out a car lane with a bus and/or bike lane on Pleasant St.

People get less aggressive when they have no options (ie another lane) to pass.

On tyranny Aristotle and Plato’s words

On tyranny Aristotle and Plato’s words

I’m reading On Tyranny this morning. The connection is clear. Aristotle and Plato weren’t predicting the future. They were describing what they’d already watched happen.

Ancient philosophy came out of real situations people had to navigate. We’re witnessing it today. #Stoicism #StoicSisterhood

Finland ends homelessness and provides shelter for all in need - scoop.me In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Why? The country applies the "Housing First" concept agains homelessness.

“In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment & counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back to a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.”

IT SAVES PUBLIC MONEY to house people.

The relationship is also visible in reverse. “Districts with the most women who bike to work have nearly six times as much protected bike lane access as those with the fewest.”

You don't have to become the Netherlands in order to enable more people to leave the car at home. Multi-use paths with some basic separation from roadways is enough to get people rolling. It's something that most cities and suburbs can do now with minimal investment and space.

When Halifax says affordable housing mandates are “not workable” and Nova Scotia hands out tax cuts that skew upward, that’s not economics speaking. That’s power.
Even New York is moving to tax ultra-rich owners of luxury second homes.
These are political choices.

Today, the Liberals rejected our NDP motion to ban surveillance pricing - a dystopian practice that will drive up costs for Canadians if we allow it to take root.

The NDP is the only party fighting to protect you from getting ripped off at the checkout.

They say that profits for corporations are more important than people

Not surprised. Profit over people. Halifax says it “can’t afford” to require affordable housing because “the economics don’t work.” But that’s a choice about who carries the cost, not a law of nature. Inclusionary zoning works in many cities.... @hfxgov.bsky.social

CBC investigation finds grocers Loblaw, Sobeys overcharging for underweight meat — again | CBC News A CBC News secret shopping investigation has — once again — uncovered how several Loblaw-owned and Sobeys-affiliated stores are overcharging for underweight meat, despite claims last year that the gro...

Grocery giants just can’t help themselves.

Underweight meat. Overweight profits.

Canadians are sick and tired of being ripped off.

A public option for groceries is overdue.

“Basic income has been shown to reduce health care costs, including an 8.5% reduction in hospitalizations. As Dr. Danielle Martin [the newly elected Liberal MP in today’s by-election] has so pointedly said, “If we discovered a drug that reduced hospitalizations by 8.5%, we’d put it in the water.”

Today, the NDP is calling on the Carney government to implement a national ban on surveillance pricing - before it becomes a predatory new normal in Canadian life.

Canadians are already being squeezed by the untenable cost of living. It’s time to stop the practice dead in its tracks.

In France, legislation came into effect recently for all car parks that have over 80 spaces to be covered with solar panels. Estimated to add around 11GW of renewable energy capacity to the national grid. Why not do likewise in Scotland? Braehead, Silverburn, Glasgow Fort etc.

From EARTHSEED: THE BOOKS OF THE LIVING

Choose your leaders

with wisdom and forethought.

To be led by a coward

is to be controlled

by all that the coward fears.
To be led by a fool

is to be led

by the opportunists

who control the fool.

To be led by a thief

is to offer up

your most precious treasures

to be stolen.
To be led by a liar

is to ask

to be told lies.

To be led by a tyrant

is to sell yourself

and those you love

into slavery.
