Still on pace: one death roughly every six days in ICE custody.
Reminder: gov't thugs are plucking innocent migrants -- often legal ones! -- off the street, kidnapping them, putting them in concentration camps, & allowing many of them to die.
On our watch, in our names, with our money.

An ice covered coast next to ice covered sea. Northern Canada / Nunavut lands.
As someone who studies gas exchange and has tried to develop new parameterizations of under ice gas exchange, this was incredible to see. I was sad when we were finally over land, which of course was also beautiful. What a marvel. It took a long time before I could see inside the plane again.
View of sea ice from an airplane with many leads and small ice bergs between a few massive ones.
View of sea ice from an airplane, with only a few small leads visible.
Originally there were a few small ice bergs and massive numbers of smaller ice in between, with large gaps of open water. As we moved closer to Northern Canada / Nunavut lands the ice was more solid, with fewer leads and only small gaps between large masses of ice.
Flying from Zürich to LA yesterday we followed a great circle route north over Greenland. I happened to look out the tiny window in the door and saw this awe-inspiring view of Baffin Bay. I've never before gotten to see sea ice during this melt period - leads forming, water exposed.. 🌊

Remember when DOGE was destroying foreign aid because it was supposedly too expensive? The entire US foreign aid budget in 2024 was $62 billion.

Trump said to select Thiel protégé as NSF director
President Donald Trump is planning to nominate a libertarian protégé of billionaire Peter Thiel with no research experience to be the next National Science Foundation director, according to reports today in the New York Times and elsewhere. 1/7
An independent agency with a budget of nearly $9 billion, NSF has been led for the past 10 months by Panchanathan’s chief of staff, Brian Stone. During that time, it has lost 40% of its PhD-level staff of senior managers and program officers. 5/7

Hah, I'd been working to convince my dad he'd love your podcast with no apparent success until last month he brought up one of your episodes to me, recommending I listen! Just when you think they're beyond learning new things..
Our new instrument, the SINKing Ecology Robot (SINKER) was highlighted recently in the Monterey Herald. I love how this story highlights the contributions of the diverse team require to make these kind of advancements in ocean science. www.montereyherald.com/2026/01/09/t...
Hi, folks! I'm new to BlueSky. I'm a polar oceanographer looking at the drivers of primary production in the Southern Ocean.
Our World-Underwater Scholarship Society &the American Academy of Underwater Sciences offer two scientific diving internships. Intern applicants can be students from colleges and universities with an interest in science and diving. The program runs primarily from mid-May through August.
From wildfire warnings to flood forecasts, NCAR's research impacts everyone in America.
President Trump's attempt to dismantle it for political vengeance is beyond reckless.
We will fight against this dangerous scheme every step of the way.
my great-grandparents arrived in the UK in the 1890s with nothing.
they sold pickles from the front room window, took in laundry, worked as tailors.
their children were nurses, teachers, salesmen.
their grandchildren were professors, designers, opticians, doctors, magistrates, entrepreneurs.
Thanks for this thread. As someone recently through the tenure process it's nice to have advice on how to be a good letter writer.
"We need regulation of e-bikes!!!" people scream as SUVs and trucks get larger and deadlier and people speed and drive distracted with impunity.
I'm happy to talk about e-bike regulation as long as folks agree that the *most urgent* problem is cars.
The 3 graphs show temperature, salinity, and oxygen from the surface to 300 m versus year from 2018 through 2025 for profiling float 5905383. The map shows the trajectory of the float from deployment in the Weddell Gyre (green square) and a loop around the Weddell sea to the present position at the red square.
What's interesting as the Thanksgiving Holiday arrives? The first @bgc-argo.bsky.social profiling floats begin to emerge from under Antarctic sea ice each year. Float 5905383 is the first @soccomproject.bsky.social float for 2025/26. It has spent 7.9 years operating under ice.

For you, sure. Started working on the next version today. Think we're going to try out a close to full size version as well..
Really nice story and really nice figures here, well done Zhi and co-authors!
The printer or a float? For the latter, just send me your address, I think they come out to ~$0.05 a float (assuming my time is worth nothing...).
However I think I need to work on v5. Our product testers (aka my children) have informed me that the CTD mast breaks too easily.
Sorry to everyone whose manuscripts / prospectuses I'm late commenting on, but there was some important float manufacturing to do... 🌊 #argo #oneargo #argofloats
