FHWA Listening Sessions #3, #4: Enhancing Travel Forecasting Practices and Effective Use of Travel Forecasts in Long-Range Transportation Planning The FHWA Office of Planning, Environment, and Realty is holding two additional listening sessions this month on undertaking research to develop a broad framework for applying different analytical approaches in support of multimodal transportation planning and decision-making. This is a follow up to our two previous listening sessions, and includes discussion on a range of planning tools, including but not limited to traditional travel demand modeling. As a recap from previous messages, this effort seeks to develop adaptive processes in support of a more agile transportation programming and planning process. Understanding that there is no single tool to conduct planning, these processes should apply to a complete range of study types including, but not limited to freight, access management, ITS, LRTPs, congestion management, land use, and safety planning. FHWA invites stakeholders such as State DOTs, MPOs, RTPOs, transit operators, and their partners to join us for a series of listening sessions to explore questions such as: * Where did you get your assumptions? * How do you come to a consensus on assumptions? * Where do you get your data and how do you verify its accuracy? * Why are you not incorporating other data sources? * Are there additional data types or sources that would be helpful, yet are still out of reach? * What are some important data sources you use that need improvement and how? * What major tools do you use for your analyses? Who should attend? Practitioners who support a wide range of analytical processes that inform systems planning and project development decision-making are invited to attend. This includes but is not limited to staff working in State DOTs, MPOs, RTPOs, county and local governments, public transportation providers, their partners, and Federal staff counterparts. If you are able to participate in this prototyping session and provide us feedback how to improve the subsequent listening sessions, please join us via the attached invitation.  Your participation will greatly enhance FHWA’s ability to identify analytical needs and build institutional capacity to aid decision making in your organization. If you have any questions or desire any further information, please contact the principal investigator Rob Schiffer (rob@jfaucett.com) and copy Jessie Stonberg (jessie.stonberg@cadmusgroup.com) or feel free to reach out directly to the FHWA Project Manager (sarah.sun@dot.gov). Please join us at 2:00 PM ET on February 11th or February 18th for the second of five virtual FHWA Listening Sessions to discuss travel forecasting and long-range transportation planning. The purpose of this session is to hear from you about your experiences, needs, assumptions, and data sources you’ve used. The ultimate goal of this project is to improve long-range travel demand forecasting and long-range transportation plans, and we look forward to hearing from you and incorporating your input. Please invite other planners and analysts not on the TMIP listserv in your organization to attend. Please contact me (Rob Schiffer) to receive a calendar invitation.  -Thanks, -Rob   Robert G. Re: Request for Insights on Seasonal Travel Forecasting Using Travel Demand Models Hello TMIP Community, Happy Friday! We have already received more than a dozen responses, and we sincerely appreciate the time and insight shared so far. While our literature review guided us in reaching out directly to selected agencies and subject matter experts, we believe it is worthwhile to broaden our outreach to capture any additional models and experiences we may have missed.
