New Majority Gov’t Should Spark Calls for Electoral Reform | OPINION Canadians have never before seen a minority government become a majority government through a combination of floor crossing and byelections.

#UofG | As the Liberals form a majority government through floor crossings and byelections, Dr. Julie Simmons suggests this might be an opportunity for Canadians to turn their attention to electoral reform.

Exclusive: Meta to start capturing employee mouse movements, keystrokes for AI training data Meta is installing new tracking software on U.S.-based employees’ computers to capture mouse movements, clicks and keystrokes for use in training its ‌artificial-intelligence models, part of a broad ...

Meta will begin keystroke logging US employees at work -- complete with mouse movements and periodic screenshots -- to train better AI agents.

This comes after Boz posted about a future in which AI will "primarily do the work" at meta.

"Let everyone but the top 1% die, that will lower healthcare costs for sure. I am very smart." ~ RFK Jr. and other conservatives, most likely. :/

This is truly an insane thing for a public health person to say.

Outright eugenics.

RFKJR needs to GO ASAP.

Very cool how once you hit a certain age you can roll a natural 1 and critically fail at things like "sleeping"

While better than nothing, this is still just superficial and doesn't really address the underlying issue. :/

everyone with real American manliness and a basic knowledge of military history knows that serious war efforts have never been derailed by such trifling matters as "communicable diseases"

When my kids were very small, total strangers would try to intervene if they saw my son playing with something pink or picking up a doll. There's a reason why children tend to play certain ways and that reason is adults are obsessed with policing gender in completely unnatural ways.

Ottawa leans toward new oil pipeline route from Alberta to southern B.C., sources say The line would terminate at the port of Vancouver, potentially avoiding some of the pitfalls of a northern route pitched by Alberta’s Premier

When Carney pushes back against fossil fuel extraction instead of pushing for it, or signals intent to reform our broken electoral system, I'll change my mind. Until then...

Opinion | Measles Took My Daughter. This Is What I Want Everyone to Know.

“What I didn’t know was that measles can cause long-term complications. A child can seem fine while the virus slowly replicates in her brain… Because both Britain and the United States are confronting outbreaks, I am sharing my story. Parents should know just how dangerous this disease is.”

Recently started biking for real, and holy f-ck - the cars.

I swear to absolute fucking God. The cars man. I've never in my 30+ year life seen so many stupid fucking idiots in traffic. Blind motherfuckers. They are making my blood boil.

Today someone decided it was a great time to make a U-turn in the middle of the street. I kept distance but the car was jerking and was indecisive and just stopped forcing me to go right on the curb making me fall head over the handle bar and crash. Not a care in the world the driver just looked at me and drove off.

Never in my life have I seen so many stupid people that can't drive. And I've had a drivers license for over 20 years soon.

A common thread among newer cyclists is realizing just how awful drivers are. There are things you simply don't notice — behavior that has been normalized — when you mostly drive. Biking, walking, or rolling through the world changes that.

does “the CIA specifically/US govt generally encouraged cocaine trafficking by allied Latin American militias and saw the resulting ‘war on drugs’ as a convenient way to militarize city police forces for domestic suppression” even count as a “conspiracy theory” anymore?

Your regular reminder that cops don't actually justify their existence or enormous budgets by solving much crime.

Approximately 11% of all serious crimes result in an arrest, and about 2% end in a conviction.

And then there's this...

*grumbles again about wanting high-speed rail connecting our cities and not needing to drive in the first place*

Sigh.

The PHEV we have is great for around town and 95% of the trips we made. But having to go down to Niagara regularly now for my partner's mother... it's still very fuel-efficient, but I'd prefer fully EV, now that their ranges are 350km+ per charge now.

15 hours ago 0 0 1 0

I've heard a limited number of Chinese EVs are going to be made available here, and they seem better priced. Not sure when they'll become available yet, though. Maybe that'll put some pressure on the traditional manufacturers. :/

*grumbles about continued subsidies for the fossil fuel industry...*

Considering selling our Plug-in Hybrid vehicle and buying a full EV... but annoyed that rebates and such for EVs are hard to find now, and they cost so much in general.

Why would anyone expect a public service to make money?

If we're going to use this as a standard, how much money did the RCMP and the Canadian Armed Forces "lose" in the past eight years?

my angry post about this case this morning is now an angry article

Roy Anthony Scott was in a mental health crisis and called 911 asking for help

Cops came and killed him, & now the Court is casting doubt on whether the cops can be held accountable for his death

The reason democrats lose is because they won't pay attention to people who didn't vote for them.

Literally the first rule of politics is to convince people to vote for you!

The rise of "AI" and some fundamentally broken ideas about how to teach young children how to read… the COVID years… and - let's face it - poor parenting by some parents… it's a perfect storm.

But there are still bright kids out there. I feel for them. :P

(Some good points at least - kids are more attuned to social causes and worldwide issues than ever? And intense training can help with the deficit... still, it's not a great situation if literacy and retention is that bad in the first place!)

16 hours ago 0 0 1 0

I kinda knew peripherally about the issues in education and literacy rates in kids, but this video was good at summarizing the situation.

I can't imagine what it's like to raise kids in this digital environment, but gawd… I hope things turn around somehow.

'We must become less reliant on American tools': Windows 11 is so bad the French government is switching to Linux — and Microsoft should be worried Is 2027 set to be the year of Linux? There are signs that this might actually be the case, this time.

This article is weird. France isn't switching to Linux because Windows is bad - it's switching because Microsoft is a US company, US companies fall under US law, and thus simply cannot be trusted with EU data. Windows can't "solve" this. There's no "fix" here.
