Requoting this for myself, but I tend to just tell stories to people whenever I can. The verbal aspect, the pauses, the inflection, that's where my rough draft is. My 'rewrite' is my first draft typically.

I do this, but I just verbally tell the story to someone. I don't write it diwn, I just spill it out, mess and all. Surprisingly, I realize immediately what is and isn't working all throughout the process, and when I sit down to write it, it's easy as can be, because I know my sticking points.
