Losing My Friend Over Wegovy She hid her semaglutide use, knowing that I would spiral. She was right; we haven’t spoken since.

a little surprised the writer of of this isn't today's Main Character yet www.thecut.com/article/wego...

I wish this author had friends to say “oh no no no you can’t publish that.”

But it’s one of those “answered by the shirt” situations.

“Fuck it! We’ll do it DEAD!”

Matt Yglesias is fuming at you right now. Cannot believe you people pushed this fine Dem out of office.

I think the positive way to say this is that we need a candidate saying both a) we have to put aside our differences and focus on what matters, which is beating Republicans, and b) your vote is an obligation to your fellow man, not a prize you give the fairest maiden.

I have thought no fewer than three times this year “wait isn’t he dead already?!?”

Just won’t stick.

Ha yes as a Mavs fan, only one name came to mind here.

Boy this seems like a relevant observation for basically everyone involved in these disputes.

You might know this - has anyone has written about the signaling implications of intra-party squabbling on those voters you mention here? My theory was that a lot of disengaged voters don't know the details of the fights but may absorb "the Dems all hate each other." Total guess though.

Someday, with luck and hard work, she will have a name too.

So they know where their home is and they know that even if they don’t get their preferred candidate, their real goals are best served by winning.

Now, as a supporter of abortion rights myself I know the idea of Trump as not an anti-abortion force seems crazy. And that’s kinda my point.

So they could have said “Trump is a traitor, stay home in November!” But I’m not aware of any significant group that did this.

They knew that a partial win (in this case ability to push him to friendly SC nominees) was better than losing.

Sure!

What I mean is that Trump, in 2016, did not commit to anti-abortion legislation. Even after Dobbs, he says he thinks they should leave it up to states.

If you were a maximalist abortion opponent, this would be a betrayal. He refuses to legislate this!

Wait but what if you read like 120,000 words, would that make it better?

Also, if people are going to freak out every time someone says that we are going to need unity to beat Republicans because if we don’t, look at the results? Not gonna make it through 2028 because you are going to hear that a lot (and deployed in many directions!).

The number who actively participate in Democratic primaries and deliberately did not vote in the 2024 general is small. The number who, fairly or unfairly, are mad at people who did that is likely higher.

If you’re wondering why any Democrat might pursue internal party appeal by criticizing them.

Absolutely. And if we’re doing Dem Tea Party I think the line is “from Mamdani to Spanberger, look what happens when we work together and remember Republicans are the real enemy.”

Booker will be a target, not a leader, of this movement.

Very disappointed when I checked Alamo showtimes this weekend and learned it was still limited release.

I mean his logic is pretty straightforward, which is that given the choice between getting mostly policies you want vs. no policies you want, we would expect rational voters to choose “most of what they want.”

So that doesn’t really apply to GOP voters.

Although as @mikescollins.bsky.social pointed out…would be a lot more persuasive if he had endorsed Mamdani!

2 days ago 3 0 2 0

That’s fine! But I do think it’s a different argument. What Booker is doing here is criticizing people who by definition are outside the tent. Is it the best way to bring them in? Who knows, probably not.

But “no one gets 100% of what they want, so we all have to compromise” is just factual.

One little quibble - if you’re actually a Clinton/Harris voter he’s not actually shitting on you.

Very explicitly this is about non-voters.

Particularly if you know any of his voters (who are now, obviously, cheering every bomb that drops on Iran)! Those guys were never anti-war.

They were pro-Trump, largely value-less, and thought it sounded good. This is also why I doubt the existence of a big anti-war conservative faction we can win

But there's nothing that creates more frustration for me than people who view voting as some sort of award they get to bestow on the most righteous instead of an obligation to guide our country however you can.

I mean I don't think Cory Booker is the right messenger for...anything really, except his own ambition.

2 days ago 0 0 1 0

See THIS is the right complaint, IMO. He's got it right here - why did he fail this test himself?

2 days ago 3 0 0 0

I don't know, I've always viewed Republican solidarity (see anti-abortion activists who still voted for Trump in huge numbers despite his lack of direct anti-abortion action and were rewarded with the end of Roe) as one of their key traits in winning so often.
