Worth noting that the authors of the paper coded whether the person asking the questions is male and female. They do find evidence that it is male academics that are systematically more hostile to women (they seem to especially do it in job market talks, although those are longer seminars, etc)

You want a brief summary of central arguments in the party competition and political economy of redistribution literatures? Then these slides of mine might be of interest. Also ideal for discussions with your family members during the festive season. www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/ptr1s...

Have been told that I appear prohibitively intimidating in this clip. Prove the haters wrong by applying to be my friend and colleague!

How should we "draw" arguments to maximise theoretical clarity and the productivity of empirical work? Juan Masullo and I had a lot of fun convening this QMMR symposium on causal figures. Lots of disagreement on best practices, but also great advice

So true - these videos are not just a 'plugging Oxford' thing! We hope to motivate people to apply to their dream programs wherever they might be.

It's application season and sometimes fear of rejections can keep us from applying to the places and programs we most wish to be studying at.

In my experience, self-doubt is especially wide-spread amongst women in academia.

So, if you know a high-potential student interested in a Politics PhD, please spread the word and send them our way! For those who might not consider themselves 'the type' for programs like this, an extra word of encouragement can make all the difference.

I'm so grateful for those who invested in my self-confidence and became the reason that I get to study with @larahankeln.bsky.social, @jacobedenhofer.bsky.social, and other amazing researchers (and friends)!

Applying to Oxford in 2022, it took a lot of convincing from people I trusted for me to see myself as someone with a chance at getting in - or of thriving in the kind of place I expected Oxford to be. For women, historically underrepresented in elite programs like ours, this is a common experience.

My classmates — Lara, @icuervo.bsky.social, Tiril, Alex, Ekaterina, and Maria — provide very helpful advice to potential applicants in this series of videos. These are especially geared towards women applicants. m.youtube.com/watch?v=zM8V...
