And now: A thread regarding my thoughts on "1.5°C"--not only as a Paris Agreement target, but also re: relevance to recent #climate events & overlaps (or not) w/geophysical realities. (This was originally written as a response to a journalist, who used excerpts in their article.)

The Devastating Role of Light Pollution in the 'Insect Apocalypse' A new study shows excess outdoor light is impacting how insects hunt, mate and make them more vulnerable to predators

For International Dark Skies Week -and every week, every night- know that light pollution is a significant contributor to biodiversity declines and animal populations, especially insects.

Especially the insects.

Critical Atlantic current significantly more likely to collapse than thought Scientists say finding is ‘very concerning’ as collapse would be catastrophic for Europe, Africa and the Americas

So many terrible things happening in the world right now, but this might be the biggest news in terms of long term catastrophic consequences.

This current stops Western Europe turning into Siberia in winter and feeds millions of people on multiple continents

I don't think it's well recognised how much airtime the fossil fuel industry has gotten in traditional media because they're considered "experts" on fossil fuels, and because they have formal, jargony knowledge of oil and gas, that means they *must* be unbiased and rational and neutral somehow

But why has China become a global leader in renewable energy production? Because the fossil fuel industry has used its enormous influence (and funding) to attack any moves towards a transition to renewable energy in the West, using both the libertarian & far right political movements & the media.

I know they address this but fundamentally, the risk of creating a fake disease to make a strong point wouldn't exist, had academia and the scientific community just outright rejected machines of mass fabrication from the outset.

Do we really need to be doing this, to prove what we already know

A GENTLE REMINDER: we are trying to eliminate fossil fuels because using them kills us.

If fossil fuels were cheap (they're not) or reliable (they're SO NOT), it would still be urgent to get rid of them because their intended use destroys our life support systems.

Lovely to chat with @aljazeera.com again, this time about the danger of fossil fuel crisis resulting in tax cuts for pollution but also the incredible opportunity from this particular crisis happening when clean technology has never been cheaper

It's time for the Australian Government to admit we can’t insure our way out of the climate crisis.

It's impossible to get insurance against likely events, and climate disasters are becoming more and more frequent. It's time to make polluters pay for the damage.

the police presence at Town Hall is unfuckingbelievable. They are deep inside the station, stopping and searching people at the top of the stairs from the platform. Absolutely off the charts I have never seen anything like it and I have protested for over 40 years.

Very sad to share the news of this legend of Australian political cartooning, and art. Dear Jon Kudelka has died, and we will be the poorer and more dull for his passing.
Sending love and condolences to his family.
What a legacy of scorching wit and joyful capturing of life he leaves.

Several parts of Australia are likely to face the worst heatwaves since the 2019/2020 bushfires.

Volunteers and underpaid frontline workers will step up to help communities.

Meanwhile, in just one year, the Australian government gave $14.9 billion in subsidies to fossil fuel producers and users.

~80% of emergency services personnel during the 2019/20 bushfires volunteered - earning $0.

We’ll likely see the same in 2026.

Meanwhile, in 2024, CEOs of companies fuelling these fires earned:
- Rio Tinto: $9.2 million
- Santos: $8.4 million
- Woodside: $7.45 million
- Whitehaven: $6.6 million

“The prime minister, Anthony Albanese, told Victorians: “We’ve got your back”.”

This coming from the PM who approved the extension of Woodside’s North West Shelf project, which is expected to generate 4 billion tonnes of emissions over 50 years, further fuelling these fires.

When this blows over I might have to share some of the emails I’ve received over the days which really make me wonder why I am the one accused of hatred. There is deep unresolved trauma being spewed by some of these people and we cannot consent to living according to their warped reality.
