It’s a great length! (That’s what he said.)
In all seriousness, your page layouts make those books feel narratively dense without them ever feeling long.
They’re like, a perfect meal. Filling, but not overstuffed.
I've been saying this for ages! I feel like 200 pages is the sweet spot!
But that might be because the Pok-Ta-Pok books (technically YA) are 200 pages and I've never been happier writing at the page count.
The boy, hogging up the whole couch.
Seems reasonable to me.
Is that the ONLY thing you are putting on hot dogs/sausages?
Emailing you now.
As a current Harper Collins author, I feel I need to tread carefully regarding my response to this.
*ahem* Harper Collins continues to suck shit.
Imagine living in a world where generative AI is eroding the fabric of reality and being like “hurr durr I tricked you into believing a falsehood . I am so funny.”
Reminder, if you are pulling some April Fools shit today.
I will block you.
I don’t have time for amateur comedians.
Band merch kinda sucks these days. We really got to do something about that.
Reposting this because I revamped my site and the link changed. Added the script for Wake Up Dead Man to my site. This is the final shooting script, it has stuff that was cut and moved around, which I think is more interesting than a conformed cleaned up version. Enjoy! rian-johnson.com/scripts
In case you were curious, I bought:
Police Story / Police Story 2 boxed set (Jackie Chan)
Throw Down (Johnnie To)
Chan is Missing (Wayne Wang)
Paris in Burning (Jennie Livingston)
Me, every time there's a 50% off sale at Criterion: I'mma just get this ONE movie.
Gentle reader, he did not get just one movie. He bought FOUR. Technically, five since one was The Police Story boxed set.
I'm so mad. I have to put away this beautiful, smutty gay wrestling book that I've developing because tomorrow I have to return to revising and scripting the actual projects that have paid me money 🙄
BUT I still have the rest of today to write a smutty wrestling l̶o̶v̶e̶ ̶t̶r̶i̶a̶n̶g̶l̶e̶ romance rhombus.
Damn, Hachette is REALLY taking L after L since Dec 2025.
I love professional wrestling.
That is all.
I’m having a sandwich for dinner. Rotisserie chicken, turkey bacon, avocado, tomato and some kewpie mayo and fruit on the side. Good stuff!
If you are struggling to figure out what to have for dinner, might I suggest a delicious sandwich?
It’s not you. It’s the industry. Harper Collins pulled some shit on me last year after we accepted a Printz Award. It sent me into one of the worst depression spirals I’ve ever experienced.
But I’m still here and remember. spite is a perfectly acceptable fuel for creativity.
Couldn’t’ve happened to a nicer piece of dried up dogshit.
Digital art of Aran and Tao as younger teens, sitting at the curb in front of a local basketball court. It’s a warm early summer evening, behind them the sky slowly turns orange and purple and at the basketball court two guys are playing, a subway on high track trails is passing and there’s some nyc buildings and skyline
Aran and Tao after the timeskip, now 19/20 years old, older and taller, sitting at an electricity box in front of a basketball court. It’s a warm summer day and the colors are warm with lots of yellow and orange and red
Aran and Tao as young adults late at night at a bodega where Aran has his late night shift. Aran sits behind the counter while Tao sits on the counter and they are solving a crossword puzzle together. They are surrounded by bodega items and clutter. The view is a top view looking down in both, like from a security camera.
Aran and Tao as young adults at a laundromat late at night. Aran puts some clothes into a dryer, while Tao behind him leans at one of the folding tables and chats with Aran. Both are smiling and are in a casual and good mood. The colors are a bit cooler with some neon lights.
Wherever I’m With You (Putnam 2027), a co-created graphic novel by Suzanne Samin and me, follows two former best friends from the Bronx: Aran, a Syrian American teen, grappling with his mother’s death,
and Tao, a college basketball star, who have to face life and old feelings once Tao moves back.
Graphic novels are absolutely comics, my friend.
I neeeeeed one of these!
Offered without commentary.
Taking this as a sign from the world that I needed this time of forced hibernation to finally come back stronger in the spring and be around more.
*Last link I posted wasn’t working! But my ability to work has been limited and I will post my link if you can spare it-

Well, I’m 11% dumber for having read that.
I literally start blood feuds with other writers who can’t be bothered writing scripts, but still want a graphic novel with their name on it.
