I just resigned from NASA. It breaks my heart to leave, but I’ve become convinced the best path forward is to do the best science I can, and that can’t be here anymore. I’m still in love with the promise of those four magic letters. Ad astra per aspera, and remember: Earth is the only good planet.

Sad to read about your decision to leave.
Maybe come to London?

People are rude, but in a passive-aggressive, veiled discourteous and faintly disparaging way.

As these are open-ended positions, there's plenty of time to get accustomed to the local phraseology. :)

Lovely memory!

Growing up in Belgium, carding was not a thing, and neither were there particularly high barriers to acquiring alcohol. Although consumption focussed overwhelmingly on the lighter side of brews.

That's correct! There are neither age nor time-after-PhD restrictions for these positions.

It’s a pitfall I often fall into, including the continued habit of describing myself as young - an assessment that, judging by the reactions of those around me, does not pass entirely uncontested.

How well can we quantify when 1.5 °C of global warming has been exceeded? Abstract. Parties to the 2015 Paris Agreement agreed to limit the long-term increase in global average temperature to well below 2 °C and pursue efforts to keep temperatures below 1.5 °C relative to p...

As we breach 1.5 °C, we must replace temperature limits with clean-energy targets Actionable goals are needed to guide the world towards what needs to happen most quickly: shifting economies to clean energy sources.

A commentary in @nature.com argues the 1.5°C temperature limit has “outlived its usefulness” because we’re headed towards overshoot and should be replaced by a “clean-energy shift” metric. That’s the wrong diagnosis. Here is why.

Professor @joerirogelj.bsky.social said:

"COP30 leaves us between a rock and a hard place […] These NDCs have come in hesitantly, inadequately and unambitiously. They move the needle, but insufficiently to confidently avoid 1.5°C or even 2°C of global warming.”

There's lot to be worried and concerned about.

It is good to see that some things are gradually (but so incredibly slowly) moving in the right direction. /end
