I still don't get why in Python it is:
", ".join(list)
instead of
list.join(", ")
Every time I see it, it just feels wrong
I have the feeling that we're running into some big issues with the way we are throwing AI into products and neglecting a lot of software engineering best practices.
The tech debt we are creating these days will eat min. double the working hours we are saving by not thinking things through.
Book Sunday:
Sometimes I wonder if my first edition of AurΓ©lien GΓ©ron's fantastic book will be worth something someday π
My reaction, every time my (storytelling) talk proposals are refused by Python conferences
A meme of Fry from Futurama squinting his eyes, that reads "Not sure if World Autocracy Award Winners or FIFA World Cup Locations"
2018 Russia
2022 Qatar
2026 USA
What are some ethically good (or at least okay) smartphones on the market at the moment that also perform well? The random crashes of my phone are getting a bit out of hand lately π
I can live with @fairphone.com and Shift phones, just wondering if there are any others I'm missing.
It is unusually cold and icy in Germany since the beginning of the year. Yet I'm still baffled at the inability of most cities to clear sidewalks for people's safety for weeks now. In Berlin the hospitals are even complaining about an alarming amount of people coming in because they slipped on ice.
Feels like Moltbook is yet another proof that humans like to be insulting, especially if they can hide behind something like agents and say "it wasn't me that said it, it was the AI"
I love the field of Web AI!
Models running in your browser can solve so many problems about API based approaches and you can build fun things with it already, e.g. this little physics playground powered by functon-gemma: huggingface.co/spaces/webml...
Sundays are (still) for books. Currently going through this one and it reminds me that you never can imagine the horrors of war until you are in one.
In the unlikely case of ever creating an AGI model, I still feel that it would either just dump all tasks back on us humans or be like Marvin from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (or both)
1. I love to write!
2. I get a lot of satisfaction from putting words in a nice order.
3. I lack the time to do proper writing.
4. I turn to AI to create a nice, smooth text in a short time.
5. The satisfaction I get from it is much lower.
6. I like writing less.
A vicious cycle π
#WeRemember 1/x
Okay so my plan was to do a week straight of casual, not very controversial posting here to see how this goes and get into a flow.
But ffs US, get your shit together. At the rate this shit show is going I don't see me entering that country any time in the next 3 years (and probably beyond).
Non-parents will probably never know the struggle with kids on weekends π
And Saturday usually is the easy day for us. Can we just skip Sunday maybe?
Any hacks on actually finishing a side project?
I feel like whenever I get to the point of creating a repo with some structure, a new project idea comes around and feels way more interesting than what I'm working on.
Any good tutorials out there?
So with all the downskilling articles these days and in fear of my own forgetfulness, I decided it is time I start to only use the command line for git from today.
I realize I forgot way too much since uni days π
I can't shake the feeling that something is different in the AI world over the last weeks.
Feels like no gigantic hyped up shit has been going on, which makes me wonder if AI-Hype-companies (especially OpenAI) are running out of material or preparing an even bigger ugly bag of surreal marketing.
@hf.co Computer Vision Hangout on Wednesday, 16th April at 7.15pm CEST(UTC+2)
I'll be talking about what is new in Computer Vision at Hugging Face, we'll have a presentation by a community member about his work and a fun Computer Vision Quiz!

π"PEP 751 β A file format to record Python dependencies for installation reproducibility" has been accepted π₯³
The 31st March should be marked a special day for all Pythonistas, commemorating this (long overdue) achievement
ChatGPT image generation seems to make a lot of headlines recently.
So I collected some use cased and experimented a bit myself. As a result I created this (not very serious) presentation, called "The End of Graphic Designers":

With the new image generation capability in ChatGPT, the path to AGI is closer than ever! We can even skip steps 3 and 4 on the way π
(this post may contain sarcasm)
π£ Slides, Slides, who wants some slides? π£
Anyway, here are mine from my presentation on "Hallucinations in MLLMs" on the @hf.co discord.
They are very similar to the ones I've used before for my PyCon Africa talk, just with a few additions.

π ML Reading Group - 25th, Jan at 8.15pm CET π
Tomorrow I'm hosting my first Reading Group session of the year on the @hf.co discord server: discord.com/events/87954...
We will look at Hallucinations in MLLMs, roughly following this paper: arxiv.org/abs/2404.18930
But hey, at least the library name Triton will finally make sense.
Can't wait for the Stargate follow-up project: Stargate Atlantis
"As we chose to worsen the climate crisis in favour of our batshit crazy AGI idea, we accidentally flooded some countries. But we figured out how to use sea water for cooling our servers, so AGI is pretty close now"
Realizing this comic speaks the truth took a lot of anxiety out of the whole Code Review process for me.
