This year, I had the opportunity to follow Enze Fu's workshop made for Coloso : "Ethereal Drawing Through Contrast & Hue"
So here we are, again. Simply enjoying drawing to improve my lighting skills as I become a student again.

I recently made some pinky studies based on picture found on pinterest. I wished to experiment more about colors combinations and contrast to improve my skills. And doing digital painting is a cozy way to do it, so here we are.

I recently made this study based on the film Azrael, by E.L. Katz. I often need to paint when I want to anchor the lighting knowledge. I really enjoyed this painting session.

I was a bit bored tonight, so I thought I could make a few nebulas in substance designer. Yeah... just for fun. ๐๐
The render isn't perfect, but there's something magical about being able to generate them randomly. ๐๐๐
I was curious if I could include substance designer in my illustration process and how to do it. So based on a previous illustration, I tried to reproduce the process in designer. And between you and me... It's kinda magical to randomly generate those milky way. <3

On youtube, I found videos of people driving alone through Seoul at night and was inspired by the mood. I wanted to study the lighting and capture the quiet atmosphere.

In april, I made a comparaison between my very first lighting (october 2022) and a recent one (april 2023). I guess... Never underestimate your capacity to learn and progress. If you believe in yourself and follow advices, you can improve your skills with some efforts.
Thank you Guillaume <3
The original scene was created by Angel Fernandes and was on the epic store.

I finished the lighting process with a LUT made in Photoshop, and applied in the post-process volume. I increased the contrast and adjusted the color balance. This is an easy way to add the final touch to the lighting. Each lighting had its own LUT.
The project was made with lumen from unreal5. In terms of lighting, I used a combination of dynamic lights associated with the previous HDRI Backdrop. I tried to emulate a natural light and avoid the feeling of unnatural spotlights.
To recreate the atmosphere of the painting, I used an HDRI dropped in the HDRIBackdrop. The HDRI come from HDRIHaven. I twisted it with hue, saturation and exposure in photoshop. Then I added a gradient for a better blend with the ExponentialHeightFog.
This time I wanted to contrast with the melancholy of the first lighting.
I also worked on a more dramatic version on Guillaume's advices.
The project was mainly inspired by Alexei Savrasov (1830 - 1897) a russian landscape painter. I worked to imitate his soft natural light and to recreate the specific contrast, between a bright sky and stormy clouds.
I started this re-lighting project in april on #unreal5 to practice #Lumen. A big thank you to @guillaumedm.bsky.social for the time he gave me and for being the perfect mentor I needed.
There is so much to say but my brain still need to process this masterpiece. Can't wait to rewatching it ! (๏ฝกโโฟโ๏ฝก)
I wasn't surprised that Kurosawa was interested in Macbeth. The theme of this drama has a lot in common with Japanese literature. It's a story of destiny, betrayal and honor. And it was interesting to see the witches become spirits or Kami in this interpretation.
๐ The film was a great surprise. Although it dates from 1957, the staging remains modern. And to be honest, I really enjoyed the parallels with Noh theater, but not only. The composition, timing and lighting were a masterclass. โค๏ธ
