We've integrated FRAP, HILO, and TIRF microscopy into a single setup, driven entirely by a single SLM. Check out the details! #Microscopy #CellBiology #OpticsExpress

This blowing my mind ๐งช
๐จJob Alert: My department in UNSW Sydney is recruiting a teaching-only Lecturer in Biophysics. The lecturer will play a key role in the pedagogical development and delivery of courses and practicals in the new undergraduate (BSc) major in #Biophysics that we are launching from 2026. #AcademicBsky ๐งช
Pleased to share that a SLM can achieve multiple FRAP to HILO to TIRF. biorxiv.org/content/10.1... (to appear in Opt Exp opg.optica.org/oe/home.cfm). Great work done by Avinash www.linkedin.com/in/avinash-u...
and Daniel linkedin.com/in/daniel-li... from the team.
We are recruiting for an academic position (Assoc Prof/Prof) in Optical and Photonic Engineering in Oxford. Please share.
Closing date 9 September 2025.

Publishing scientific papers is an obstacle course. There are many aspects to this but lengthy review times are one. That's why I am very excited about the new initiative @biologyopen.bsky.social, @biologists.bsky.social open access journal: Fast & Fair 1/n ๐งช

Excited to share our new review with Emmanuel on tissue patterning in organ morphogenesis! We explore how repetitive patterns form, starting with the concept of L-systems and highlighting an ERK-mediated curvature feedback. Please check it out! sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

๐ New preprint! ๐
Happy to share a new preprint from @kimboonekamp.bsky.social and me: We developed a 3D force inference method for budding organoids!

@michaelboutros.bsky.social with help from U. Engel.
Here the details.
Getting tissue stress from images is tough, and elastic tension sensors are a way to solve this. Still, the analysis is complex. Try our GUI gitlab.gwdg.de/betzlab_publ... implementing analytical solutions to obtain surface stresses AND shape parameters of beads and nuclei.

Our new OPM system, in which the camera is placed directly after the secondary objective to directly detect the oblique plane.
In our work, we just put the camera directly into the remote refocus volume to detect the oblique plane directly, without the need for a tertiary microscope system!
I have seen this change the lives of many students and postdocs--if you are interested in cell biology, biophysics, microscopy or more: check this out! The Embryology course is also similarly life-changing
Interesting findings by Jacob Notbohm's group. Nematic defects may form as a result of spatially coordinated patterns in cell forces and motion.
