Within these past few chapters, there have been numerous instances of me having to draw characters crying. This is not intentional, I swear. Between Ashley, Daisy and Penelope, someone's going to be with red eyes.

Astro Boy is one of the hardest franchises to do any kind of research on for me, I swear.

As I said last year, Astro Boy is the worst franchise I have ever encountered in terms of finding resources. As far as I know, the 2003 series has a grey colour palette and was only exported on the VideoNow XP (with interactive features), because every screenshot is a low resolution. I jest, but this is impressively frustrating. You know what’s funnier? Wiki pages get a bad rap, but some are admirably accurate. The Mario Wiki has been a highly useful resource over the years. But what franchise are we dealing with here? Things can’t make sense in Astro World. See, nothing on this Epsilon character’s page hinted at her having a “serious” personality. Nothing. Maybe you’re thinking that I should’ve just watched the show. I could’ve, but I’m very busy right now, and often I can guess how a character acts just from their design. All her non-2003 designs get this point across better. This is one of the rare occasions where I’ve had to completely redo dialogue because I got the personality wrong. That’s impressive. Anyways, the series doesn’t star many important women, so I had limited options once I got past Uran. In terms of difficulty, I had flashbacks to the 2025 drawing of Ranamon from Digimon due to the armpieces. But it went more smoothly this time around, largely because more of Epsilon is obscured. Her facial expressions reflect my original draft, since I didn’t have time to correct it all. Still, I don’t think serious means incapable of emoting. Hell, in half the screenshots, she’s doing just that. However, I find that I struggle a lot more with serious dialogue than with more playful dialogue. It’s not my favourite drawing of the year, but it still brings variety with centring on foot worship. Though if I ever draw from this franchise again, I need to get more creative with backgrounds. A nature environment would’ve been more appropriate in retrospect.

Rosalina is not a Mario character I normally like much, and even I was disappointed with how she was used in this film. There were plenty of ways they could have handled her better.

Rosalina puts her big feet on a box back stage. --- Of all the characters I expected to draw this year, Rosalina was nowhere on the list. But after seeing the Super Mario Galaxy Movie, I started scribbling. I won’t spoil the major plot points, but this movie is terrible. The first film was a fun 5/10 at best, and this one is a 2/10. The animation is great, and there are some big laughs, but the film is so bloated that there’s no room for emotional beats. It’s barely a story; it’s an amusement park where you’re being flung from one attraction to the next without a breather. The film’s handling of Rosalina is a major failure. For her to receive less screentime than a non-Mario character is just insulting. I’ve never been Rosalina’s biggest fan. I prefer her design to Peach’s stiff doll look, and as someone with a deep affinity for magic, I like her cosmic elements. However, she’s incredibly boring. She’s defined by that lifeless stoicism, and the echo effect on her voice isn’t helping. Daisy, my favourite, is also boring. But she’s at least defined by being active and loud, whereas Rosalina is entirely passive. I’ve noticed long ago a trend among Nintendo fans of exaggerating the most minimal plot details, like claiming Paper Mario II is super dark despite the game barely having dark themes until the climax. Or claiming Super Paper Mario is one of the deepest stories simply because its plot is more in your face. It’s as if they live in a bubble where other media doesn’t exist. Rosalina’s backstory is decent, but it’s not that stand-out by normal game standards, and it hardly affects her in the present. I may not love her in the games, but I loathe how she was treated here. A movie is meant to adapt and improve characters for a medium where story matters. This lady is just a plot device. Since the studio wasn’t interested in doing anything with her, I decided I would.

I’ve now watched at least half of Dragon Ball GT, and I can say with confidence that Pan is one of my least favourite DB characters. Her design is all that saves her; I liked her primarily because of her design in the past. GT’s context makes this girl unbearably annoying. Between her whining, Goku’s invincibility, Giru/Gill’s repeating of its name and Trunks’ lack of character, this is an endurance of a main cast to deal with. For as much as people claim the show is underrated, it deserves a lot of the criticism. So rather than drawing that “lady” as she calls herself, I went with an alternate version of her. I’d seen Xeno Pan years ago, and I liked the design. I still do. It’s not the first thing I’d think of when it comes to Pan, but I think the new outfit looks good on her. I particularly like all the black accents, as I feel they fit with her red beautifully. This is a simple drawing, as the box style indicates, but I’m happy with how I’ve drawn her feet. I don’t think I need to repeat how toes are the main area I’m focusing on improving. I think they look quite natural here. I wasn’t sure whether to leave them plain or paint them black. Either would’ve suited her, but I didn’t want to repeat the black nails so soon after giving Kairi that treatment. Plus, and I don’t know many feel this, but unpainted toenails just give a vibe of feet stinking more. It’s not rooted in anything, but perhaps it hints at less pampering and therefore less fresh smells. Seeing Pan without nails makes me think I’ll have to work harder to lick the stink off her feet. If there’s anything else I can say about these time-fuck Dragon Ball games, they feature another character I’m now considering drawing. So they’re not completely disposable to me.

That would make sense...if Sonic characters didn't already have five fingers since the beginning. As is, it's a strange inconsistency to draw the feet without the same number of toes.

This is another commission. Like always, inconsistent usernames, but this is DeviantArt user OverDepressedSmol. And per usual with commissions, it is hard for me to say much about this one. Again, it’s easier when it’s my own idea versus someone else’s. Of all the Strawberry Shortcake characters I could’ve been expected to draw, the boy was the last one in my mind. Not that I don’t like his design; on the contrary, it is nice. It’s just completely unexpected. I thought I’d have to tweak the background colours more, but to my surprise, I got them completely accurate to Strawberry Shortcake’s actual house in the show. That I didn’t need a reference impressed me. Unlike last year, I actually don’t know what I’m going to do with characters from this franchise this year. I suppose this is an unofficial head start, but we’ll see what I have in mind down the road.

I'll always say Kairi is a badly written character, but I still adore her. Her KH1 design is so good. It's the only one letting you get glimpses of her feet by default, too.

Tomorrow Kingdom Hearts turns twenty-four. Easy to keep track of how old it is, as I'm only a few months younger. Online discourse tends to blur objective quality with subjective love. Of course, quality is still subjective, but you can make stronger arguments with your points. Kairi is the perfect example to me. She's a terrible character, yet I adore her. She was easily a top-five childhood crush. I was enamoured by her, and I still am, especially her KH1 design. But since KH2, she has just a been bland plot device who barely even interacts with her best friends; she has no lines with Riku in KH3. I loathe the argument of "she's a good character just badly used". That works in very limited contexts, and this isn't one. The writers chose to not do anything with her. She's a bad character, and I just hope KH4 fixes that. I originally wanted to draw her just dangling her shoes. But dangling sneakers is tricky to make appealing on its own, so I added the insole. Some gawk at why one would focus on shoes, but there is something thrilling about worshipping the very fabric that cradles someone's feet I also prefer to give her black nails. The dark contrast fits her colour scheme perfectly. I love her and her deliciously smelly feet. I just wish she were a stronger character outside of fanfiction.
