Went to the theater to see Exit 8, the new J-horror film based on the game of the same name. I knew nothing going in, and I found it to be a clever and creepy liminal space horror film. Fans of the game seem to really be pleased with this adaptation. Iโ€™ll be curious how Backrooms compares to this.

I should watch that show someday. A rare live action Gerry and Sylvia Anderson show!

The Earth is able to exist as is because of extremely specific conditions in our solar system, the distance from our sun (including the type of star it is), and also the moon. Btw the movie never even mentions the moon. Cโ€™mon. Also, good luck getting through the Oort Cloud and the Heliosphere lol

Like, at that point the Earth is just going to be a dead ball of ice floating in the cosmos for thousands of years. Why even bother? Thereโ€™s nothing left. They even say they have no idea what to do when they reach a new star, basically just figure it out as they go. Justโ€ฆ what?

I want to go into detail about the serious WTFery of the science, but itโ€™d take forever to explain the context. I will say this - the premise is that the sun is expanding so the Earth needs to leave the solar system (via thousands of rockets lol). Andโ€ฆ go light years away to another star? Good luck?

Watched the 2019 Chinese sci-fi disaster film The Wandering Earth. The science in this movie is ridiculously dumb and a lot of it makes no sense. I didnโ€™t find the characters very likeable either.

The Jupiter imagery (like when itโ€™s stripping Earthโ€™s atmosphere) was hauntingly beautiful at least.

His acting in this is way more toward's the Bram Stoker's Dracula side of his skill level than the Matrix side, that's for sure ๐Ÿ˜‚

When one of the villains (name escapes me) pulled a laser wire out of his thumb I was like 'oh yeah I had a similar ability in Cyberpunk' XD

But naw, you can definitely pick up on the DNA in there. I guess this is the closest we've gotten to a Cyberpunk adaptation, in a sense ;p

Funnily enough this came out after Speed, which had launched him into stardom (at least, more than Bill & Ted did)!

I didn't realize there were different cuts! He's shockingly mellow in this one. I'm used to him playing brutal gangsters (or gameshow hosts LOL)

LOL his best delivery in the movie XD

... and I also was impressed how, like Firefly, there's a bunch of cultures and languages intermixed. Gives it a truly international feel. Speaking of influences, this movie is like if Cowboy Beebop and Fifth Element had a baby.

Also, farts are the universal language.

...and there's an emotional core with the relationship of a mourning father and the little oddball girl he reluctantly ends up protecting. There's also a nice twist near the end, but it gets deflated by a really dumb deus ex machina. Richard Armitage plays the villain really creepily too... 2/3

I also watched Space Sweepers, the 2021 Korean space western about a team of debris cleaners who get wrapped up in a conspiracy by a Musk-like tech figure to destroy Earth and colonize Mars. I really liked the special effects in this, and the art design is colourful. The cast is really likable...1/2

Watched the 1995 cheeseball cyberpunk flick Johnny Mnemonic. It's a cornball classic, and is sort of like Demolition Man meets the 90s Super Mario Bros. movie. Reeves' acting is... interesting lol

Overall it's a fun time if you just enjoy the silliness. Made me want to play Cyberpunk 2077 again lol

I actually own only three Japanese Star Fox games, so I put the Adventures manual on the bottom. I really like the colours they used for that one.

My summoning circle didnโ€™t work last week, so let me try again with the Japanese editions of some Star Fox games. Maybe NOJ will get the signal :P

Bonus: the Star Fox Game Watch!
