"Of 22 sites being held on a waiting list, before designation, 14 were at risk from development. That's 64% of potential SSSI's, and the wildlife living within them, at risk of being lost."

One week in, 149 birds have been registered. Among them is 25-yr-old Roy, currently the oldest bird of the population, after most other elderly terns died during the HPAI outbreaks of 2022 and 2023.

This was where Ronald Lockley set up the first bird observatory in the 1920s. It has since been immaculately restored by volunteers 👌

Bad news for the Raccoon, but this is a good example of the efficiency of the APHA rapid removal process for animals on the 'Species Alerts' list, to prevent those forming the greatest ecological/economic threats from getting established.

This is not normal. At all.
An AI-generated image of a UK petrol station with cars queuing in the forecourt. In the background an image of a billboard that reads "Support UK Fuel Production." Text on top of the image reads "Should the UK produce its own fuel again?" above "yes" and "no" text with the 'like' and 'heart' symbols to encourage Facebook users to 'vote'

The most exciting thing you’ll see today. Run bunny!!
Somewhere deep in the Georgian mountains, the sky just closed. A no-fly zone, larger than greater Tbilisi, appeared almost without notice. The official story involves a telescope. The telescope hasn't been touched since the Khrushchev era. The real story involves something else entirely. 👽🧵 [1/10]
woah! that's awesome

Nice afternoon colour-ring reading gulls at South Walney yesterday. Six colour-ringed birds which was less than I was expecting, but grass covered tarsus of most birds so probably missed a few! @sarahdalgulls.bsky.social
annoyingly I think the interesting bits in my life are more very low budget arthouse indie/european weird movie, mostly thanks to Greek bears and Walney
ooh! great to see! thank you!
Ash dieback is having some odd disturbance effects in ancient woodland. The extra light under dying ash canopy is allowing these wild roses to go crazy, scrambling up the tree trunks to heights of 7 m, forming these funky columns.
Imagine if there was a Geordie pope
"While... Apollo 11’s task was to prove that a human could go to the moon, Artemis 2 perhaps had a different mission: to bring all the other human beings along with them on the journey. Instead of asking the question “can we do this?”, Artemis 2 seems to ask: “how does it feel to do this?”"
Sitting here crying while after getting WhatsApped the photo on the right, so let me tell you a little story about how we got here from the photo on the left and why repatriation research matters!

I think I did this exact same route in reverse the day before you did! It's brilliant, such a great walk full of interest. The old photos are fascinating too, I hadn't clicked that the POW camp was so big
Afternoon!
After Lambley I nipped over the river onto a trail along the river. Gorgeous scenery on a peaceful day despite the clarts in the field. I'd known what I was expecting, but coming across such extensive remains of this POW Camp was a massive highlight of the day.
Here's the link to the #1926Census of #Ireland which just went live, in case anyone is looking for it. Happy searching! nationalarchives.ie/collections/...

This is a nice (by which I mean awful) example of performative environmentalism from Mamoa. An impassioned lament about a preventable ecological catastrophe that fails to mention the main cause or solution. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

This is a cracker.
Very happy for all the people discovering the phrase "competence porn" via Noah Wyle's GQ article! My point below intensifies.
