Plan-based occlusion maps: Theoretical overview and parametric variations - Mike Christenson, Joy Quach, 2026 Occlusion maps are qualitative, plan-based visualization tools composed of multiple, distributed isovist polygons. This paper formalizes occlusion maps as a rep...

Mike Christenson continues to publish wonderful papers putting the inferential conception to use in architecture. I could not be more chuffed - exactly the kind of reaction I was hoping for with Inference and Representation:

Habermas and the Light of Reason: On Late Critical Theory | Los Angeles Review of Books Martin Jay on the ways Habermas’s attempt to restore the light of reason after its eclipse involved salient departures from traditional notions of reason.

As early as 1962 with The Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere.

One of Habermas' many merits was to be the first to understand the reactionary form of postmodernism behind Adorno and Horkheimer's unduly influential Dialectics of Enlightenment.

No thinker ever did so much to restore the cause of reason.

Now out: How did earthquakes come to have a (quantitative) size? How can we quantify without experimental control? @cristianlarph.bsky.social and I answer both questions and show their implications for human science measurement.

John Herschel was born OTD in 1792.

His 1831 Preliminary Discourse launched a flowering of reflection on the aims and methods of science among British thinkers that was so rich and influential that Charles Sanders Peirce would later dub it “the Age of Method.”

"An account of representation must make room for misrepresentation in all its different varieties."

"Representation is not a success term. You can represent something and do it very poorly, with very little success."

yes, I discuss isomorphism, partial isomorphism, and homomorphism extensively. But only and always in the context of the work these structural notions may perform in models in empirical science. I come out strongly against the former two but I am more amenable to the latter.

I don't, although on my deflationist view there turns out to be no difference in kind between mathematical and scientific representation...

I do discuss mathematical models in science though...

It was an honor and a privilege to study under, and work with, Bas at San Francisco State. In particular, his advanced logic course brings back so many wonderful and impactful memories. I can't think of a more deserving philosopher for such a prize! #philsci #philosophy

Excellent abstract

2025 has been a difficult year, which I will be happy to leave behind. Yet, it has turned into my most prolific year in terms of publications. The below 7 papers / book chapters are amongst my best ever. Some were researched and written in previous years, obviously. Still, remarkable productivity.
