I told @businessinsider.com 's Madison Hoff that I'm worried about how energy prices will affect the labor market:
"It is a bad idea to keep whacking the job market like a piñata and hoping that it doesn't break, even if it's held together so far."

1/ Indeed job postings continue to slog extremely slowly toward a trough. Down ~5% Y/Y. In levels we've been flat since the fall.
You can be doing everything “right” and still find yourself unemployed, underpaid, or unsure about your next moves.

I have an Icelandic Sheepdog, so this is very understandable!

In theory, you should be able to post whatever you want on your personal pages. In reality, what you share can come back to bite you. You can be fired or passed over for a job based on your online presence.

This is not good.

One of the best ways to find current job openings, is to search Google using the "Date Posted" feature. Search by the job title and location you're interested in (or select Remote). Then click Date Posted and choose Yesterday, Last 3 Days, or Last Week.
When faced with a shockingly exploitative new employment contract that would’ve forced them to sign away their IP, their likeness rights, and their power of attorney, Jupiter Jetson and her coworkers at Sheri’s fought back—fast.

No sign of labor market reacceleration in the Indeed job postings data.
The best job sites for applicant response rates (with thanks to Huntr) Google jobs (the job search engine), GovernmentJobs, Wellfound (startup/tech roles), Glassdoor, JoinHandshake (college students/alumni), Welcome to the Jungle, Indeed, and LinkedIn (near the bottom of the list).
As @alisondoyle.bsky.social recently noted, this job market feels a lot like the Great Recession — but without the long-term unemployment benefits that cushioned the blow for mid-aughts workers.

1/ While it throws cold water on some of the more fanciful “economic boom” takes of the past few months, 2.2% Y/Y real GDP growth is pretty high when you consider it was accompanied by near-zero employment growth
Seems to be a lot of talk about GHOST JOBS.

Google is one of the best sources of job listings. Huntr reports that the best applicant response rates come from Google Jobs (11.3%), followed by GovernmentJobs, and Wellfound. Traditional job sites yield a less impressive return: LinkedIn (3.1%), Indeed (4.5%), and ZipRecruiter (2.8%).
Avoiding phony job listings is harder than it sounds. You can’t just look for legitimate employers or companies that frequently hire, because even real companies are guilty of posting ghost jobs.

In more bad job market news, this month’s BLS report revised total employment for 2025 from +584,000 jobs to +181,000 jobs.
That means that the economy added an average of only 15,083 jobs per month for all of last year compared to 186,000 a month in 2024.
