To me, this project feels like a really good meeting of pop music's past and future, the past with the idea of putting covers in the forefront and the songs being covered, and the future with the leading sound of the forward-thinking queer artists making pop music right now, i can see why inserting the past in the future of pop could be seen as one step forward and two steps back, but hey! like they say in my country "its in the old bowls that we make the best soups"
if you told me a dorian electra covers album would be the most divisive record of the year, i don't think i would have believed you but i probably would have after thinking about it twice the concept of covers has been in a weird place ever since the 2000s with it being mostly reserved to first music competition reality-show and then youtube virality, but rarely do they conquer the charts, with the exepctions of Maneskin's cover of Beggin' and Luke Combs' cover of Fast Car, which came with their own nothing-burger think pieces. so an entire album of covers in the most internet-poisoned genre that is hyperpop-tinged electropop? that was bound to attract some mixed opinions, so where do i land on the opinion warfare? ...so i kinda love this? Granted im a lot more easy than most of my generations on covers, i don't think they are a lesser form of music expression, since you know, before Rock N Roll became the blueprint, it was extremely common for artists to be mere interprets and mainly sing covers of standards and the originals were rarely written by them to begin with. and some of the changes given to the songs are really interesting, the Hips Don't Lie cover seem to be considered a big highlight by most people here and i get it! it sounds amazing but i think a lot of people are sleeping on the way Frost Children and/or FREE JIMI turned Enya's Caribbean Blue into a straight up Electro House song! However, there's a few songs where i can see the point of some of the folks who dislike the album, that Without Me cover is pretty bad, and i unforunately don't really care for the Hella Good cover too

In addition to being hilarious, I always marvel at the incredible artistry the animators packed into every frame of the old Looney Tunes shorts. All of the little character nuances, the gorgeous backgrounds, the musical accents… these things really are such treasures of cinema.
