A study in Nature Communications shows that hominins were consistently and specifically procuring a single kind of raw material to make stone tools at the South African site of Jojosi between 220 and 110 thousand years ago. go.nature.com/4cyKgiX 🏺🧪

If at the very least historians would use in-text referencing, then at least I'd know before leaving through an entire book to find the endnote that it will contain a fun tangent or good gossip.

Ah, here the general idea is that if people have to hand in their finds they will stop cooperating and go underground. To my mind this is a bit defeatist and also quite a cynical view of many detectorists, but I seem to hold a minority view (in Holland at least).

To my mind this reduces metal detecting in Holland to a tragedy of the commons. A collective possession, heritage, is used for individual gain in the form of enjoyment, but all too often also monetary profit.

1 week ago 1 0 1 0

How does the removal of monetary value work?

In Netherlands detectorists have to register their finds, but only have to keep them available for 6 months. Afterwards, they can do whatever they want, including breaking up find complexes and selling finds singly and shipping them abroad.

A Latin inscription carved on a gritstone tablet and painted with red text. The translation reads “To the holy god Serapis, Claudius Hieronymianus, legate of the Sixth Legion, Victorious, built this temple from the ground".

A Latin inscription carved on a gritstone tablet and painted with red text. The translation reads “To the holy god Serapis, Claudius Hieronymianus, legate of the Sixth Legion, Victorious, built this temple from the ground".

An inscription from a temple to Serapis in York, possibly built during the stay of the emperor Septimius Severus and family c.208-211 CE. The northern-most attested temple to an Egyptian god, the York temple may have also housed shrines to Isis, Harpocrates and Anubis. 🏺 #AncientBluesky #Egyptology

Metaaldetector | De regels van Floor YouTube video by vpro

Detecting, even when done legally, leads to loss of important context. Further, after 6 months there is no protection to the finds. Collections are broken up, finds disappear abroad, etc. etc.

Don´t do it!

Et tu, Freek Vonk?

Dutch popular science presenter Vonk has apparently markets a children's metal detector.

Detecting in Holland is a tragedy of the commons; treasure hunting is legal in the top 30 cm of soil. After registration, finds can be traded freely.

Neen!

NWO-debat: Wetenschap zonder taboe. Stellen we nog genoeg vragen in de wetenschap? | NWO Is er in de Nederlandse wetenschap genoeg ruimte voor afwijkende perspectieven? I do not like archaeological progress narratives. And I notice some of my countrymen are very sceptical when I outline the above F1 scenario.

Perhaps we should end our progress fetish?

We should also abolish F1, because even electrically, it is just a festival of conspicuous consumption.

F1 as archaeological parable on progress.

The move to electricity a clear innovation (and saving the planet). Some adapt (e.g. Hamilton), some are like silent film actors, failing to adapt to sound. Verstappen's career is languishing as he can only perform with the primitive and old-fashioned.
