I honestly wonder if someone who has been so thoroughly humiliated by an uprising in his own party can continue to act as leader. Like as a practical matter, he is not in charge. (and in my view should not be)

This is my field, I often talk about people who are "involved in the criminal justice system", to encompass accused people and people serving sentences etc. So I could see usng "justice involved people" but like, it's just a descriptive phrase, nothing for Beshear to be crying and throwing up about.

Does North Van have school buses? Kids should walk bike or bus in, better for everyone.

Catalina is in fact trans but that's just a coincidence and none of their business.

Idk man Miki Dora was in fact an outspoken racist and antisemite. The swastikas were an accurate indicator of his beliefs.

In any event I think it is correct to suggest that a person who flashes nazi symbols solely because they think it will make them popular, as you say, shouldn't be a US Senator.

They never made any money because their contract with their record label was incredibly unfair. They went on strike in the 90s and refused to make more music until they were released from it, which eventually happened, but by that point they were old and sick and crazy and kinda hated each other.

A fun fact about xtc is that they were an up-and-coming punk band until the lead got crippling stage anxiety and they stopped touring and almost immediately turned into a bunch of weird dads making charming weird dad music for like 20 years.

But now every time it fails to help you it also boils a cup of potable water that would otherwise be available to a marginalised community, and deposits half a dollar in a billionaire's bank account.

so who's to say if it's better or worse

A point I keep making for litigation is that a true but unreliable answer produced out of chaos is not actually helpful. An effective argument is coherent and defendable, not just fortuitously correct.

Even without AI, judges aren't impressed when I say this is the answer but I don't know why.

The bail conversation in Canada is incredibly dysfunctional. Inflammatory and inaccurate rhetoric about accused people on release is a hobby shared by politicians across the ideological spectrum. It's ludicrous to suggest that we need to detain more people before trial.

I work in the criminal justice system where for all its many (many, many) faults, nobody questions that it's appropriate for a large number of well paid professionals to work for years on the issues arising from a single person's death. Impossible to reconcile that with war numbers and attitudes.

Listen it was two days a year they were expected to, well, not to care or even pretend to care really, but two days a year when it was slightly harder than usual to pretend trans people don't exist, and this was clearly unacceptable.

In the album after this they have a song about how beautiful and smart trans women are, which is nice.

Burning down reconciliation because of a couple racist news cycles. Cynical, cowardly, and stupid.

This sums it up extremely well.

Also it's okay to have specialized tools? I don't need my transcription program to be able to give me (incorrect) advice about how to fix my dishwasher.

You do what you gotta do to get by in this fallen world, no judgment whatsoever from me. The situation is bad but that's not your fault.

In my work I deal with lots of video from various sources and constantly need transcripts, and there's this fight about whether AI transcription tools are acceptable (accuracy is critical) and it's like, we already had transcription technology? That didn't hallucinate? Can we just keep using that?

100%, although I'm lucky to be in a position where I can flat out refuse to use any tool that is presented as AI. Hasn't steered me wrong yet and I don't think it will.

My beef with those uses--and I mean no criticism of you specifically--is that these tools can exist without needing an LLM. We don't need to tap into the entirety of accumulated human knowledge (stolen) and boil away a gallon of a marginalised community's drinking water to make an image transparent.

It is far from clear that being a worse version of the party is a winning electoral formula. Also call me naive but maybe it's worth at least trying to do the right thing?

A few years old now but Naomi Oreskes and Eric Conway's Merchants of Doubt is a great primer on this.

Yeah I remember in 2019 all anyone in Alberta could talk about was this paper by a former MuchMusic DJ and some other people written three years earlier in a different province. That's absolutely the reason why the Alberta NDP had only their second best election ever, i.e. were "crushed".

Ten years ago, he co-authored an aspirational policy manifesto describing an approach to equitably manage the impending (now ongoing) climate crisis, which he correctly argued must include a full and quick divestment from fossil fuels. It is deranged to treat this as an attack on Alberta's NDP.
