The Georgian State Dancers are said to have inspired Terry Nation in the creation of the Daleks. With the audio on, you can see why. 😀

You won’t be *more* engaged with the world because almost by definition adopting an obsolete technology will disconnect from it. That’s part of the charm for me, but it’s an escape from reality not bringing you closer to it.
The thing is: these technologies weren’t inconvenient at the time and they were embedded in ecosystems of discovery. The friction comes from the obsolescence and you are cutting yourself off from eg happening upon a cool new song you’ve never heard before. I don’t know if this is good or bad.

It's so funny to me that right-wingers love to pretend to love the Middle Ages and the Crusades and all that and then complain that the Pope shouldn't get involved in politics.
I’m more forgiving of someone nursing a long exhausted cappuccino, huddled over a notebook or book. But laptop and no identifiable drink - get to fuck. And video calls in a cafe deserves violence.
Japanese sci-fi: two robots in space, yearning
American sci-fi: man gets the author's beliefs on polygamy confirmed by the aliens of ramalama IV

British sci-fi: nuclear war. Everyone dead. America's fault
A part of that exchange did make me wonder if some on the left refuse to accept something is a wealth tax unless it is called wealth tax and fits a very narrow design.
In her defence, I still think 1992 is still deeply embedded in Labour’s collective memory. Plus since Osborne Tories will typically propose some hellishly unaffordable tax cut which Labour thinks it would be electoral suicide to oppose.
Are you seeing the deterrent effect coming from the seller not realising all their gains, hence limiting their ability to relocate? This wouldn’t be nearly as powerful a deterrent as buyers trying to find the extra cash, though, would it?
I don’t think we should compare stamp duty to annual property taxes: surely the best next tax is capital gains tax on the seller? (Something I think the Treasury has actually modelled.)
Although by this criterion every post war Chancellor is bad?
Literally the worst use of land is a golf course.
Illustration of people looking at balloons and a sign saying 450,000 children lifted out of poverty.
Today is a good day for children!
450,000 will be lifted out of poverty thanks to the end of the two-child limit.
We're celebrating this along with 17 other orgs with an advert in The Times.
The advert has been funded by hundreds of small donations from people supporting @38degrees.bsky.social.
Interesting idea :)
I actually don’t think energy rationing is too bad an idea. Launch the TEQs!!!

Got Daleks on my mind.
Apart from chat platforms, it seems.
The nature of the internet has changed continually, from walled gardens to libertarian joyscape back to walled gardens again. Ask Gopher, UseNet, AOL, Compuserve, Geocities, MySpace, Blogspot, Tumblr. Microblogging isn’t the final cause of the internet.
You have a bad feeling in your tummy. You run to the loo. It is an unpleasant experience. Just as you whimper with relief a sound comes from the bowl: with horror, you realise whatever you’ve just passed is now talking to you. A hideous, tiny, shit demon. It says,
Jesus Christ what’s wrong with you guys, lately?
This was actually the best birthday present. It was so good!!!
journalists: hey guys, please read my piece in today’s newspaper, “why your family ought to be killed”.
also journalists: wow, a lot of people angry at me for supposedly saying their family “ought to be killed”, maybe feels like they didn’t even read the piece
Why does LG make it so hard to turn off motion smoothing?!?
Kemi Badenoch says hold her drink.
Aren’t you guys the hopeful story that a country can pull back from the abyss, even when a thuggish right seems to be driving it further and further right?
There’s a philosopher I follow on here who came up via the philosophy of science route. They are now exploring emotions and their feed has been a series of things philosophers of the emotions have been pointing out since Aristotle. There’s a strange domain arrogance in philosophy.
Omg how did I ever miss the existence of this! Certainly seems in the same vein as Edge of Darkness. And what a cast.
