NEW: i spoke to nine (!) scientists across several disciplines whose work was cited in the new Department of Energy report that downplays the severity of climate change. all of them say their work was misrepresented, cherry picked, and/or lacked context —

A note for the scientists especially:
I drafted most of this book before I knew exactly how bad 2025 was going to be (and it's not done yet) but I knew that particle physics and cosmology already needed to make the case to the public. This book does that. 🧪

Here, Vought doesn’t dispute slow-walking release of NIH grants from congressionally appropriated funds so that they can be cancelled in a couple of months through pocket rescission, thereby bypassing congress to enact huge cuts to NIH research.
It is all eugenics because he believes his family is superior and “deserved” that care. But see, when the state serves the public, it serves all, which means people he believes are inferior would benefit. We can’t have that in the racist-ableist belief system that constitutes eugenics.
“The inquiry found that Edinburgh University became a “haven” for professors who developed theories of white supremacism in the 18th and 19th centuries, and who played a pivotal role in the creation of discredited “racial pseudo-sciences” that placed Africans at the bottom of a racial hierarchy”

Regional experts believe eliminating the Roadless Rule could impact the carbon capturing ability, fire resistance and integrity of Midwest National Forests.
We write as deeply concerned members of the Antarctic research community after learning of the plan, by the National Science Foundation, to terminate the lease of the Research Vessel/ IceBreaker Nathaniel B. Palmer in October of this year. The United States Antarctic Program has had at least one dedicated research vessel operating in the Southern Ocean since 1968. For those nearly six decades, the N.B. Palmer and its predecessors have supported world-class science that helped grow the U.S.'s standing as a leader of international scientific research. At the same time, these vessels have provided critical logistical support for the U.S. Antarctic scientific bases. Even as automation and remote observations have increased our observational capabilities in this harsh region of the world, there's no replacement for a dedicated research vessel that can access remote sea ice-covered regions of Antarctica and that allows sampling of the
of the world, there's no replacement for a dedicated research vessel that can access remote sea ice-covered regions of Antarctica and that allows sampling of the full depth of the ocean and coastal regions on land. The early loss of the N.B. Palmer is troubling, especially at a time when other nations, including China, Korea, Japan, Britain, and Australia, among others, are increasing their marine capability for Antarctic waters. This decision forecasts the decline of an exceptional history of U.S. scientific contributions. Maintaining a continued US ship-based presence also has strong, strategic and national security geopolitical implications. Antarctica remains a model for international cooperation and peace, with all activities, marine and terrestrial, south of 60°S governed by the 1959 Antarctic Treaty. The treaty, signed by 58 nations, committed all parties to a civilian presence guiding scientific investigation of this remote and fragile part of the world Today many
Treaty. The treaty, signed by 58 nations, committed all parties to a civilian presence guiding scientific investigation of this remote and fragile part of the world. Today, many nations operate research stations and vessels in the Antarctic. While Antarctica remains remote and a difficult place to access, the modern world allows easier access each year and the number of groups there grows each year, for research, for tourism, for exploitation of fishery stocks, and simply for exerting national presence. We urge reconsideration of the decision to terminate the lease of the RVIB Nathaniel B. Palmer, and the continued forward-looking development of the next generation of Antarctic research vessels that will continue US leadership, scientifically and geopolitically, in the high southern latitudes. Sincerely,
More than 100 scientists who work in Antarctica or care about having a strong U.S. research presence there have signed a letter calling for the U.S. to keep the Palmer in operation. (4/n)
A key tactic in an abusive relationship is for the abuser to take things away from you for no reason and then expect you to be grateful to them when they give you back what was always rightfully yours to begin with

News from the NSF Division of Earth Sciences Informational Webinar: If US scientists want to support NSF EAR, they should continue to submit proposals. The number of proposals is an important metric for quantifying need and therefore influencing the budget
FYI: The House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, Democratic Staff, is trying to get more info on the impact of recent research grant terminations.

Over the weekend, I interviewed one of the NIH employees who signed this letter (someone other than those quoted in this AP story). We talked about what they're doing and the importance of standing up. It was a moving conversation about risk and responsibility. Stay tuned for my piece on NIH and LA.
The child in this trustee’s scenario? Faculty. Who submitted their tenure files for consideration in accordance with the terms of their employment. Both sides have a responsibility in that contract, one to submit and one to review.
I hope everyone really hears this.
It's incredible how we've just totally normalized "A bunch of random dudes are bypassing every federal law to plunder the government" & no one seems to care.
Folks look at you like you're crazy when you say we're in the midst of the worst Article I constitutional crisis in 🇺🇸 history, & well 🤷♂️
Is this for real

Important for understanding US today: The Color of Law- Rothstein (2017) argues that for over a century after the abolition of slavery, federal, state and local government codified - then tolerated - racist segregation in housing, employment, education, income & wealth.

I need to actually get to my gate in time, but am stuck processing this particular table:
So, as you might know, I have been in the process of tracking the activities of DOGE staff across the federal government. And now I've built an auto-updating website to browse the data
It's not done (lots more content to write), but news is moving fast, so here it is dogetrack.info
Enjoy!
Everyone involved in trying to pass off that ChatGPT-extruded disinformation manifesto as a scientific report should be, at the very least, barred from public office for life. The MAHA report is dangerous criminal misconduct and an offence to the process of science.

The US Administration has indefinitely blocked *all* student visa applicants from getting a visa interview.
Worldwide, unconditional, no end date. All.
International students are crucial to the US university system, American innovation, and future US prosperity.
I spent ten years attacking universities as illiberal and overly woke. Now that the Trump administration is using my rhetoric to destroy American science and higher education, I am horrified but not horrified enough to apologize.
Texas legislators just passed a bill that
gives politically-appointed regents control over faculty curriculum, hiring, & governance. It does what they accuse academics of doing: privileging ideas, biases, & agendas on political grounds, & silencing those that do not follow their ideology.
