When I’m writing I think I’m looking for a feeling I had as a kid that comics were made by giants. (and then you grow up, and you realize… no, they were made by people who needed rent money argh argh)
Oh, ok I remember what I wanted to say. When I was writing ghosts of marvel comics vol 1, I had in mind the documentary “reprise” by Hervé Leroux. Research done with care, humility and in a really humane way.
This way I’m not polluting the main book with my sad little me
I’m trying to have a clear ethic: i don’t sensationalize, i don’t rush to be first, and i try not to put myself at the center of the subject. That last one is the hardest part, so much so I decided to do a little separate journal of my experience working on that marvel history GN
About doing a documentary graphic novel: I like filmmakers like Raymond Depardon or Claire Simon, comics artists like Emmanuel Guibert. Good observers & listeners . They don’t overwrite the lives they portray. They create smthing that honors complexity+ leaves room for silence.
I feel that’s one of the reasons I chose a cartoony style over realism. it keeps a certain distance. You’re always aware that this is constructed (you can see the seams, as I do often say)
at the same time, it still has to feel real enough to step into.

Trying to rephrase : a comicbook gives confidence to something that was full of doubt.
I’m trying to be perfectly accurate in my work, but maybe the job isn’t to be perfectly accurate. It’s maybe to be precise enough for the reader to step in and accept the version you’re showing
the moment you draw something, it freezes. In my Marvel graphic novel, I sometimes take something uncertain & turn it into something you can see. It’s not the truth (can’t be ) it’s just one version. But once it’s on the page, it feels stable and too real
comic do something very specific: they stop things. IRL, everything moves all the time, memories shift, stories change, details will depend on who’s talking.

I’ve taken pages out and still have the last chapter to write (60 pages!) but so far Volume 2 will be about 40 pages longer that vol 1.
