Number of days where it is important that this song exists is pretty wild right now.

I am deeply ashamed at recognizing myself in the conclusion of this🧵. I spend a lot of time being outraged at what the US is doing but apparently did not care enough to find out that the EU differs mostly in messaging. This is horrible.
Managed to write something after a long silence, honestly. This one is personal, about letting go of past worldviews, and vowing to refuse to fit in. Maybe some it will resonate.

When Trump takes Greenland with no major repercussions, he won't stop there.
This doesn't mean invading Europe. But it does mean destroying European social democracy. 🧵

One curious thing on this site about speaking out against the encroachment of LLMs is that inevitably you get accused of being anti-tech. I don’t hate technology. I’ve used machine learning in my own code before. But I also recognize that oligarchs are so hellbent on pushing this tech for a reason.

1/ A longtime Wired editor just wrote a mush-brained essay about how he totally missed the political rot of Silicon Valley (& still doesn't get it).
But in the late 1990s, a Wired journalist warned of a toxic ideology bubbling up from tech. Paulina Borsook has largely been erased. Let's change that

The idea that human cognition is, or can be understood as, a form of computation is a useful conceptual tool for cognitive science. It was a foundational assumption during the birth of cognitive science as a multidisciplinary field, with Artificial Intelligence (AI) as one of its contributing fields. One conception of Al in this context is as a provider of computational tools (frameworks, concepts, formalisms, models, proofs, simulations, etc.) that support theory building in cognitive science. The contemporary field of Al, however, has taken the theoretical possibility of explaining human cognition as a form of computation to imply the practical feasibility of realising human(-like or -level) cognition in factual computational systems; and, the field frames this realisation as a short-term inevitability. Yet, as we formally prove herein, creating systems with human(-like or -level) cognition is intrinsically computationally intractable.
🚨Our paper `Reclaiming AI as a theoretical tool for cognitive science' is now forthcoming in the journal Computational Brain & Behaviour. (Preprint: osf.io/preprints/ps...)

Israel is perpetrating a “live-streamed genocide” in Gaza, committing illegal acts with the “specific intent” of wiping out Palestinians, Amnesty International has said.

Can find no mention of this in any German news?
I wish I could unfollow anyone not skeeting about Gaza and Palestine right now. There is a for-real genocide going on RIGHT NOW and people are still skeeting about sandwiches and art and USians having protest signs. It makes me want to throw up.

Headline "US democracy has died"
The neoliberal dream of fossil fuel billionaire Charles Koch was always the destruction of US democracy and the elimination of government (except for its repressive organs police, courts, prisons, military ofc), and now he has won.
What now? A 🧵.

The United States has declared economic war on some of its closest allies and Silicon Valley is itching to use the power of the state to defend its interests at all costs.
It’s time for an alliance not just to combat US belligerence, but to build a different vision for tech.

New construction driven by population growth primarily impacts dense urban centers like Berlin, Leipzig, and Munich, where housing sizes are already among the smallest. In contrast, many rural areas have significant unused housing stock.
Image shows that the GHG emissions for three scenarios (baseline, material efficiency, lifetime extension) are all higher than the path determined by German climate targets.
Even with optimistic material efficiency improvements, Germany is on track to miss its emission reduction targets. Reducing floor space per capita would be most effective to limit emissions, but no policies currently support this shift.
Image shows regional construction patterns in Germany’s NUTS3 regions (counties and cities) overall, and divided into stock addition due to growing populations and stock replentishment replacing demolished buildings. Construction demand is concentrated in large urban centers like Belrin, Munich and Leipzig.
This spatial resolution enabled us to assess whether there are enough houses in the places where people will actually need them. National scenarios are blind to this, likely leading to misestimations of Circular Economy potentials.
His really cool dynamic MFA study ("live (a) little: GHG emissions from residential building materials for all 400 counties and cities of Germany until 2050") explores scenarios for each city and county in Germany based on current housing stock and population trends.
Without reversing the trend of increasing floor space per capita in Germany, climate targets for housing and construction will not be met.
Congrats @napiontek.bsky.social on his first paper =)

Here it is: I think it's some of the most important writing I have ever done.
What We Are Up Against.
Exposing the secret history of the making of the climate crisis should change everything about how we act to stop it.
