🚨 URGENT: A lost sheep wandered onto Catskill Animal Sanctuary. After no owner came forward, she’s now an official CAS resident, but she’s still very scared and in need of an emergency shear and medical care.

We’re looking for #volunteers!

Join us as a Volunteer Tours Greeter at Catskill Animal Sanctuary and help welcome guests, check in tours, and support our visitor programs. Just 2–4 weekend days a month through November.

It’s a great way to give back and hang with rescued animals. 🐖🐴

This morning, we caught two of our beloved horses, Dharma and MJ, standing calmly while a few pigeons perch on their backs. It’s a small but profound example of the gentleness that lives within the heart of all animals when they are given the chance to simply be.

This is the spirit of sanctuary. 🐴🕊️

At CAS, we provide intensive care tailored to each individual’s needs. For Jess and Schmidt, that includes special diets, regular medical care, weight management, and lots of enrichment. While the industry sees them as commodities, we see them as individuals worthy of long, peaceful lives.

Unlike turkeys in nature who can live 10+ years, broad-breasted turkeys suffer from drastically shorter lifespans due solely to the way we breed them to serve the food system.

In the meat industry, turkeys are typically slaughtered between 12-16 weeks old. Beyond that age, their bodies begin to break down under the strain: joint issues, heart failure, and mobility problems are all common. Even feather growth can be a challenge, as we’ve already seen in Jess and Schmidt.

Different as these two turkeys are, they have one crucial thing in common: they were never meant to live a long life.

Jess and Schmidt belong to the most common commercial turkey breed, engineered through generations of artificial and selective breeding to grow unusually large in just a few weeks.

These two recently arrived to us from another rescue that was at capacity. Jess is fearless, sassy and curious, while Schmidt is quiet, thoughtful and gentle.

Today, nearly 25 years later, our organization stands as living proof of what one person’s courage, grit, and love can build.

Kathy will be retiring as Executive Director on June 30th. While we’ll miss her presence in daily operations, her legacy will continue to shape CAS’ future for generations.

In 2001, Kathy Stevens walked away from a stable career and a steady paycheck to follow a vision: to create a haven for farmed animals, a place where their lives would be valued, and their stories would change hearts.

So why do we cherish one species and exploit the other?

At CAS, we see cows as the unique, sentient individuals they are.

If you wouldn’t harm a dog, consider extending that same compassion towards cows— and all farmed animals. 🐮💚🐶

Intelligent — cows can learn their names, solve problems, and have the ability to remember human faces for years.

Social — just like dogs, cows thrive in communities. They have best friends and will also go through intense grieving periods when loved ones are lost.
