Chattanooga was determined to have the least amount of pretrial publicity. The only other choices to have a diverse venire would be Nashville or Knoxville.

There was no effort to seat a jury from Shelby Count, TN. This case has been in the media non-stop with the civil components, federal criminal components, and political fallout.

The defense moved to seat an out of county jury. Everyone went over to Chattanooga (6 hours away) to seat the jury from 150 prospective jurors. The sequestered jury came back to Memphis for trial. It was determined that Hamilton County (Chattanooga) had the least amount of pretrial publicity.

I'm not sure how hard the prosecution opposed the defense efforts to seat an out of county jury. Clearly, the amount of pretrial publicity in Memphis probably supported Judge Jones granting the request. This story has civil components, federal criminal components, and local political fallout.

Not sure what that means. As a trial lawyer, during jury selection demographic make up is always part of the discussion. 8 men and 4 women were seated.

An interesting point is that this was an all white jury from Chattanooga brought to Memphis.
